partial neck turning

If you were to partially neck turn to even out brass necks for a factory chambered rifle, would you then size with a standard FL die (expander ball removed) and expand with a mandrel? or would you size with a FL bushing die (with the expander removed)? I'm thinking the standard die and mandrel to push the remaining irregularities to the outside of the neck for more consistent tension. Opinions?

When you say "partial" turn, I presume you mean skim turn just to even out thick(er) portions of the neck? If so, it depends upon how much your regular FL die reduces OD of your necks. If enough for .002 or so neck tension, then you're good. If not, you need to use a bushing die to get enough reduction to then even out neck tension with a mandrel.

Generally, yes. That's the best way to get a precise ID.

Yes that's true and why you should use a mandrel. The neck turning then is a waste of time in a factory chamber.

Thats is your opinion, you've obviously never run across brass that had .004 variance in neck thickness or checked.
Quality brass like Lapua or ADG certainly almost always will take care of the need in most situations.

Like I've stated earlier people who refuse to turn necks say its waste of time and complain about runout is it the die making your brass crooked or variances in you neck brass thickness on the outside. Almost all brass will have at least .001- .002 difference.

I have Norma brass in 7mm Weatherby that varies from .0125" up to .0145" in some necks...

Sherm, always demanding your right. It gets a little tiring. My opinion is there is a right time to turn and an unnecessary time to turn. Right time - tight neck chambers, competition (benchrest, F class, etc.)
Unnecessary - quality brass in a factory chamber. Neck turning quality brass with a .001 difference is a waste of time.
Are there other times to turn? There is always an example you can use to say your right, like using crappy brass or necking down wildcats. But why waste time, use quality brass and don't waste time neck turning.

Ha Ha, im not demanding anything.
If you use quality brass of course you dont need to turn in most instances.
Your the one who said turning is a waste of time in some cases yes but not all.
Some people its not a waste of time some it is.

just because your chamber is big enough at neck doesnt mean you dont wanna hold the bullet at the center of bore ???
