We first met Wayne when he participated in our shooting class with Non-Typical Outfitters several summers ago. He has since hunted with NTO several times for elk and bear and he texted me this story about his elk hunt from 2017 and asked me to post it for him.
This is my story about the hunt of 2017 at Non-typical Outfitters. I was at a different camp, at the same time Len & Andy and the LRH group were there. We had 6 hunters at our camp. We had good success in our camp, if not mistaken, we harvested 5 nice bulls out of 6 hunters. My luck came on the last day.
At about 1 o'clock in the afternoon Gary my guide & I saw a herd of about 80 or so elk on the mountain across from us. We got off the horse & headed into the timber for a better shot. As we started to set up for the shot, I realized I'd forgotten my shooting sticks, so me & Gary took three limbs, with forks at the end of them. We put together our own shooting sticks because the shot was 680 yards and there was no way to set up prone.
This was only the 6th time, I had shot the new gun I bought from Len & Andy. A 7mm mag mountain rifle with a Huskemaw 5-20x50 scope. Luckily I also had the new Sig Sauer KILO 2400 ballistic rangefinder. That made all the difference in the world. I was using a 168 grain Berger bullet.
If you get the chance take a trip to Rob Wyley's outfit in Wyoming to hunt elk go for it. Be prepared & in shape because it's the real deal. I say this because I've been to Non-typical Outfitters since the first Long range class , hunted elk & bear and had a great time every time I go.
