Oregon Elk hunting areas

Evening gents,
I am looking to do a DIY Oregon elk hunt and need some guidance. I am stationed down in California so I don't know much about where to go or what units and areas within the units to hunt. Can anyone point me in the right direction and give me some pointers. Not looking for your prized spots ( I need to find my own), but some help to get started. Never doen an elk hunt before.

Are you wanting to hunt Roosevelts or Rocky Mountain?

I would prefer Rocky Mountain Elk, but am not picky. I am new to elk hunting and am trying to put a trip together. I would like to be able to set up a spike camp (preferrebly out of the truck) but will carry it in if neccesary.

Looking for areas that will be good for a "first timer".
