A buddy and I have tags in northwest Colorado for antlerless elk and buck mule deer. This will be day-hiking, not packing in. I plan on limiting myself to 300 yards on an elk and 400 yards on a deer; probably the shots, if any, will be shorter.
I could bring an elk specific rifle and a deer specific rifle. Or I could bring a combo rifle and a backup combo rifle.
Here are the options I am considering, as I own all of these:
7 Rem mag in a heavy Rem Sendero
300 Savage (Savage 99 lever action)
25-06 Rem in Weatherby Vanguard
270 Win in a Sako A-III
They all shoot with similar accuracy at these ranges. I will be shooting factory ammo with them all, except the 300 Savage, which I cannot load with long/heavy bullets anyway, 180 gr max, and 150 gr as well.
I don't think I can leave the 270 at home. Change my mind.
