New Sig Cross Chassis Based 6.5lb Rifle

LOL
I wish I could get free stuff !
I'm just looking forwards to a lightweight chassis that I can put in my pack as I walk thru the snowflake forest to my hunting grounds. I have built a few packable stocks but I have to assemble them. I'm not a fan of their cartridge choices so far but I can spin a 6.5 creed to a 6.5x.284 If it's as popular as the RPR there will be plenty of aftermarket offerings soon.

That .277 Fury honestly sounds pretty interesting as a hunting cartridge but Sig will no doubt be the only company manufacturing same as well as the brass for some time and their ammo/brass is always extremely expensive.

Now if they'd chamber it in 6.5 PRC there would be a stampede at the stores as soon as they hit the shelves.

Rose, what is high pressure ammo ? Can it be reloaded ? I saw in the video it has a steel base on a brass case, some type of military design for the 6.8/2.77...
is it a 6.8x51mm aka .277x.308 ?
Searched this and it looks promising for reloading;

I'm wondering the same thing. The steel base might be a military requirement for the "high pressure ammo" spec's.

Considering how much pressure we run in some conventional cases I'm sure someone will produce reloadable brass at some point but as long as Sig holds the patent it's gonna be high.

Did you see the 80,000 CUP ?

Love the concept... can't wait to see the execution.

agreed that I look forward to seeing other calibers and broader market adoption.

One big question in my mind is the risk/benefit of the high pressure cartridge. Current thinking and tech seem to point to lower pressure as more beneficial, but maybe we're limited by current production methods? Materials? Tech? One of the reasons I'm so attracted to Rich's Sherman Short line is the low-pressure efficiency, but maybe that's old thought?

Working pressure is 80K psi. No other way to get 3k with a 140 out of the 308 case. Steel base is to hold the pressure. The case is assembled from 3 pieces. Don't see how this case could be used for a precision rifle. The .277 is for the new military belt fed MG contract. Sig is also peddling it as a hunting round.

80k is just scary and I seriously wonder how anything other than a solid piece of brass could stand up to it especially for multiple firings.

I have no problem getting in 2800-2850 Running loads that list 60k out of my .260's but this is nuts.

I also dont' see how barrels are going to withstand that kind of heat and pressure even in burst mode for sustained periods.

I know metallurgy has advanced immensely over the last 20-30 years but this sounds crazy to me.

Here is a link to everything you wanted to know about the .277 SIG Fury. Enjoy. :)

I'm not seeing anything about whether or not these cases can be reloaded and honestly I'm questioning if it could be safely done.

I can see a three piece case surviving one firing at these pressures but that's bout it.

I guess it's nice to see that they are also looking at producing a 6.5 variant but I don't see much application for people like us looking for sub MOA accuracy, even sub .5 MOA accuracy which cannot be consistently achieved with factory rifles and ammo.

I also expect this ammunition to be extremely expensive and hard to come buy if you're not ordering direct and in bulk.

How do you attach a sling to the rear stock?
QD studs I'd imagine similar to a lot of AR platforms on the market.

I've installed them on most of my rifles on the left side so that when slung the rifle lays flat against my back instead of flopping around.

It also allows me to simply swap slings easily from rifle to rifle which doesn't sound like a big deal when you have large numbers of them slings add up.

These flush mount studs by McMillan are excellent and you can install them in your rifle in about ten minutes. Just drill, apply some epoxy for a permanent attachment and screw them in to flush.
