need advice on a new scope just bought a Remington VLS in 243 WIN looking for a scope for this rifle it will used mostly for coyote's and ground hog's and other small critter's. im leaning toward the luepold varment in 4.5x14.40 or a 6x20x40 but not sure if the 6x20 is more than i need

thanks Jim

I'll you some of my input. I have a mk4 4.5-14x50 on my coyote rig, and I have shot almost everyone of my coyotes at 4.5. We call them in close, and if you are calling I wouldn't want to go any lower than 4.5. I did have a 3-9 and the 3 was great for up close running shots.

BUT, if you are going to be shooting a lot of other varmints then the 20 could be pretty fun. But still not sure if it is worth the trade off on the front...?

good luck.

4.5-14 will do everything you want. The only thing you gain w/the 6.5-20 is a little fun factor when shooting pds etc. As far as most real world hunting situtions the higher power is a hinderance. The 4.5-14 is still plenty for 1000 yd prairie doggin'.

Majority of scopes in my rifles have 4.5X14 magnification. It's a perfect compromise for both short and long range shooting. I have scope that has 20 and up magnification but rarely dialed up beyond 12X even when shooting target as small as ground squirrels. IMO anything over 20X is a wasted magnification unless of course you are shooting at targets beyond one mile. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Perfect advie.

All those in favor of side focus say "aye". All those against? The Aye's have it, Motion passes! Love my side focus leupolds, unfortunately my 4.5-14 was pre-side focus but it's still my favorite all around magnification.

I like the leupold vx2, 6-18 target scopes. They have fine duplex and an AO. They are good scopes for the money. You'll be paying quite a bit more for the other scopes you mentioned, but they are worth it. I also have a 4.5-14x50 MK4, its on my 300 RUM though. Awesome scope and glass all the way around, side focus is great. But I coulda bought 2 of the 6-18 targets for the price I paid for it. Just something to think about I guess.
