New Rimfire for hunting and plinking

Would like a new Rim Fire. I own a Mossberg semi auto 22 LR but would like a bolt action, something with a little better range. I took a look at the 17 HMR cause the closest sporting goods store (5mins) carries a few different kinds of HMR bullets at decent prices. So i started looking at them. I saw that the range is a lot better. Power is pretty good. And prices are reasonable. I found the Marlin Model 917VSF vs Savage 93R17 BVSS and liked what i saw. Which one would you say is better? Both around same price

Before you make up your mind look at the Savage with the thumb hole stock It is a beautiful
rifle with a good laminate stock and they have a reputation for good accuracy. I tried to find
out what the model # was but there website would not come up for me.

I have had two of the Marlins and they both shot well but were cheaply made and I had to replace one or more parts on each so I decided to move on to something better.

I now have two 17 HMRs, one is a custom anschutz that I re barreled and the other is a
beautiful Weatherby Mark xx (It also has an Anschutz action) and they are phenomenal
shooters.

Savage 93R17

just hand over the credit card and buy a really good scope. I have 2 of them that shoot at 2600FPS and are 1 MOA at 150 yds!

I wont plink with anything else!

I looked at Savage, and I looked at CZ. Couldn't get comfortable with the Savage bolt. I'm a Mauser type of guy. Like Anschutz, Kimber and Sako, but can't afford them.

If you are comfortable with the Savage bolt, then you do get an accurate rifle at a bargain basement price. Owners typically report outstanding accuracy, but that's true of several other brands as well. Rugers bolt guns I have shot have been quite accurate.

If I only had the two to choose from, I would go with the Savage. I have one and love it.

Just food for thought...take a look at the Ruger M77/17 as well. I know, I know...it's more expensive. Trust me, you won't regret the extra $ down the road. The action is much smoother and has much less slop. I've owned two and both were tack drivers. At 100 yds., I use the "shoot-n-see" bullet hole patches as targets. Yep, 1" targets @ 100 yds and that rifle just won't miss. I can work my way around the 1" patch until it's completely yellow or falls off the target stand.

As far as optics go, I'm using the BSA sweet .17 on both of mine and love it. Helluva scope for the price. I think they're right around $79-$85 last I checked.

If you can find a CZ for a reasonable price, buy it. My 17 and 22lr will easily keep up with Anshutz and highly modded Rugers etc. Both rifles are out-of -the-box with not so much as a bedding job. The 17 has a Nikon Monarch, and the 22 has the cheaper Prostaff, both with the BDC reticle. CZ is the best bang for the buck in a rimfire rifle, hands down. Both guns will shoot pretty much anything you put in them, and shoot it well. They have good factory triggers and buttery smooth actions. The aftermarket isn't huge for CZ, but you really don't need much to make them great shooters. Just try one, and you'll thank the guy that you bought it from, I promise.
