I am looking for a new muzzleloader for realistic range of 400 yds or less. Is the rem ultimate enough? Any good custom makers better for a little more. Anyone have real world experience with gunwerks? I want to have something legal for most states.

Thanks

Got sabotless (bullet to bore) and smokeless. I have had several and right now I have 2. The one in my pic is built on a Terminus Zeus action, the other is a 10MLII I converted to 45 cal. My Terminus is a Brux 1-20 twist barrel and I shoot Pittman accumax bullets. Doing away with the sabot is the only way to go IMHO if you really want distance. Then your only limited in speed by how much recoil you want. This pic is a 3 shot 200 yard group from this morning.

Arrowhead rifles makes a great muzzleloader.
Couldn't agree more.
Also consider LR Customs rifles.
Once you go custom, everything else gets forgotten ;)

The Remington Ultimate will get you to 400yds easily but, you should exchange out the OEM ignition system and go with the Arrowhead RUM ignition system conversion. Some really long range harvests with Parker Black Max bullets.

Ultimate shooting 300gr SST's and PELLETS :)

I built mine using an Arrowhead remage barrel off an old Remington Action. I killed my buck at 440 yards this year using a 325 grain XLD.

Build a smokeless compatible rifle and shoot BH209 when hunting in western states. You won't be able to use that muzzy in ID but it'll work in CO, UT, NV, NM and AZ I believe.

If you can swing it, go custom. My dad (R.I.P.) always said, "If you don't have the money or time to do it right the first time, where will you get the money and time to do it over?"

These custom rifles are more accurate than most shooters can shoot them. If you can find a RUM that someone didn't like and has it for sale cheap, but it for the action. I'm not sure Luke is converting RUM's right now, you'd have to check with him, but I do know Levi is. Re-barrel it with a fast twist 45cal and Arrowhead BP and ignition, then be prepared to find out just how well you can shoot ;)

The custom rifles capable of shooting SML, make the best BH209 rifles.
I needed to set my zero stop from shooting production charges of BH209 (competition requirement), which I did the other day.
I shot two different bullets using 100grs WEIGHT of BH209. First bullet was shot at the center diamond in the photo below. I forgot....... that bullet requires a veggie wad and I was using wool. Shot to the right was fouler, next two were a 2n1.
I then switched to the Arrowhead 300gr XLD bullets and again 100grs WEIGHT of BH209, wool wad. First five (5) rounds went into the lower right diamond. Made my final adjustment and sent five (5) to the lower left diamond. I can't do this every time, but the rifle is capable all the time.

Bullet to bore, for sure. Lots of info at Doug's Message Board. I have both 40 and 45 cal. Love them!

Holy Shoot bergers. That Red Hawk is sexy as heck. OmG. Wish i never opened this post. Crap. Now my TC bone collector feels inadequate and so do i.
