I am about in the same boat, but. I am building a 6mm-06 rifle. Using a 280 Rem AI case as a starting point. The case is longer from the base to start of shoulder than other cases(as in 25,270,&06 AI cases) are. Why 280 AI is longer I don't know. I am using a 700 Rem Action that was built for a 25-06, 270, or 30-06. Possible look at other 6.5 cases presently built to see what there case length is and their COAL. Substitute the new case length in. I don't know for sure if that will help. You have a wider range of bullets to choose from depending on what you are going to use. I am figuring on use 100gr+ bullets, and max out at 115gr bullets. The lighter bullets I am not really interested in presently. I am looking at ranges to about 700yds. I am going to use a Bartlein 400MODBB barrel and getting a second barrel at the same time. The COAL has me concern too, that's about all I can do without going to a Mag Action custom built. I know I don't want

Ya, it's kinda funny. Everyone says the .270 and .280 are based off the 30-06 case, but .270 and .280 cases actually a slightly longer.

Guys looking for high performance will use the .280AI case for a little more powder capacity, the Sherman case offers a little more, and as far as I know, the Gibbs the most powder capacity

I have a PTG trued Rem 700 with one of their one piece bolts I'm running mine in. I went with the HS precision DBM and it has a COAL of 3.7 so I've got plenty of room. I necked up Norma 25-06 brass and it's been fine. I've also necked down Lapua 30-06 and if feels like much better quality but a lot more work. First target is the 135 shooting 4831sc, second the 156 with RL26, both at 100yds.

You can get different box and trigger housing or magazines for the 700. You can also change to a clip stile. I didn't want a single shot rifle either. I am not going to shot matches either. You might look at Triggertech for a trigger. Fit right in and same safety set up. You canlighten the trigger down to oz if you use and like lighten trigger.

The Superformance and R 23 is for Absolute Hammers. They require much faster powders than cup and core lead bullets.

If you have H1000 give that a shot with 250 or 215 primer. 215 was better at 100 but to much vertical at 500, so a 250 and H1000 was better at 500.
H1000 may not be the fastest but its really good. A 215 primer load looked like Ross1147 at 100 but at 500 it had almost 4" of vertical switching to a 250 and seating depth change got it down to 1.5 vertical

Agreed, 250s shoot the best out of mine as well. That's with 4831sc and RL26.

You can get out to at least 3.650" very comfortably in a 700 LA mag box. So 3.43" should be a non issue.

Thank you everyone for your valued input. It's what I value most on this forum. After talking with my smith and Rich at Sherman Custom Cartridges I've decided to go with the 6.5 Sherman instead of the 6.5-06 AI. Performance is similar with the Sherman getting about 100 fps more. The primary reasons were support such as die and reamer availability as well as Rich's responsiveness and willingness to help out. Another selling factor for me was this is designed on the 270 Win case of which I happen to have several hundred new cases. I think they are both awesome cartridges and not a tremendous amount of difference between the two.
