I've got a .243 on a large ring Mauser 98 action that was given to me by my grandfather and about to have a friend's father change the barrel.
I will be using it for coyote hunting so ideally I want to be shooting 65-75gr projectiles.
As far as barrel profile goes, I guess as long as it's got enough meat on the end to thread it so that I can use suppressors on it, lighter the better. I'm not really wanting a super heavy barrel to tote around.

I don't mind spending some money of the right barrel and tooling but I'm not set on buying something super expensive just for a name either. Any help/opinions on particular barrels and tooling or companies you folks have had good luck talking to would be greatly appreciated!

I had a 98 Mauser in 243 win. It was an Interarms MarkX with a pencil thin barrel. It shot bullets in that weight class very well. 1/2 moa or better with several different powders. I should of never sold it. But a buddy needed a rifle for his wife and I rarely used it. He installed it in a pink laminated stock and bedded it himself. People laugh when they see him with it, until they see it shoot. It takes nice bucks almost every year. So his wife won't let him take it coyote hunting lol.

How does it shoot now?
It shoots ok but did get some rust/corrosion in the barrel years ago that negatively affected it. Without being able to thread the barrel to run my suppressor, I honestly won't ever use it. The current barrel doesn't have enough meat on the end to thread it or I might would just try that. The length and profile won't even allow me to shorten the barrel enough to get back to a heavy enough spot on the barrel for threading. I assume that's why you're asking?

It's been a great rifle and used to be a great shooter!

In regards to barrel profiles to use with suppressors, since it is a 6mm barrel, you could always thread it 1/2-28 and use an adapter to get it to 5/8-24. Or you could thread it 5/8-24 with a collar installed like the one in this pic. That is a Tikka sporter barrel.
