I have a Rem 700 SS in .270 wsm. Upgraded to Timney 510 and bedded laminate stock. It's been my main shooter for many years and I have decided to have it upgrade. Action blued New SS barrel with two port brake. With only a few good options I am planning on staying with the 270 wsm, I like the cartridge and have all the dies for loading. This will be a Long Range deer bear gun. Anyone feel the cartridge should be changed? 6.5 seems to have less energy? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

That cartridge will be fine, but I would give it a tight twist and get it throated to shoot the Berger 170 Elite Hunter bullets, that pill really brings that cartridge to life. If you were to change, the only thing I would do is maybe the 7 WSM or for a little more umph 7mm Sherman Shortmag, you will push the 195's around 2900+ if my memory is right...or if you wanted a heavy thumper you could do the 300 Sherman Shortmag, and push the 215 Berger's at 2950+ fps, now that is a hard hitter.

But if you want to stay with the 270, it will run with the best of them if you twist it for the 170. I would also look into getting an extended mag box from ptg or Wyatts, that way you could load long.

I am having trouble running the AB150 at 2.875" as they don't cycle out of the mag very well. Gunsmith was going to change box to center feed. Would I be able to cycle up to 170 grain?

Not sure on single vs double, but here are two mag boxes I would consider

MBE-4 Magazine Box, WYATT'S OUTDOOR, INC.

3-B (BAINEY) Magazine Box - Pacific Tool and Gauge

The Wyatts allows 2.995" OAL and the PTG allows 3.110" overall length, and I think both work with the WSM case. It takes a little milling to the receiver, but it's a quick install for the smith to do, and opens alot more performance for your cartridge selection. Running a 170 long will give you room for more powder to get that super high bc bullet moving fast

Perfect, my gunsmith just told me the same thing. He also stated that a normal chamber dreamer is fine and stated the throat should be fine for the 170 Berger.

I really love my Savage 270 wsm a lot! This cartridge as a normal spec 270wsm chamber in my model 16 pushes 150vld right at 3270 fps out of a 24" barrel and has plenty of room in my mag for longer bullets.
According to JBM thats 1100 ft/lb at 900 yards. So if you are set up with dies brass and bullets I would highly suggest staying with 270wsm unless you are just really wanting to try something different.

One question, what made you want to rebarrel? Is your barrel burned out?

The normal 270 WSM chamber will not be good with the 170 Berger and will eat a lot of powder room!
I run a .180 throat for my 270 WSMs which seat the 170 at 3.125, a little shorter throat and a Bainey box would work best in a short Rem action. Sounds like we may see a come back on the 165 Matrix as well!!

Thanks for all good info guys. I will stick with the .270 and I guess I can deepen the throat at a later date if needed.

I personally would get a longer throat. I would make a dummy round or two with the 170 at about 3.070" or so, and have the smith ream the throat for that to touch the lands. With the bainey box, you can load to the lands and have .040" or so to chase the land if you load to touch them, more if you are jumping. Just my thought. The 150 is a good pill too, as well as many others, the 170 just takes the cake in this cartridge. Depends on what you want out of it, I think you could probably get 3000 with the 170, but that is just a guess.

I think what your smith meant was that you CAN shoot the 170 with the standard throat....as in you pull the trigger and it will go bang....But will it work well....probably not. Even with the lighter bullets like the 150 Berger it may not be ideal.

If you want the best performance and most accuracy, have it throated for the specific bullet you want to shoot, and I bet you will be very happy. with a G1 of .662, a G7 of .339, and a twist rate of 1 in 8 going 3000 fps or more....that 170 is killer.
