Hi Everyone,
As promised, I'm reporting on my visit to Cutting Edge Bullets. Overall I was very impressed.
My original reason for going there was to discuss building a long range hunting rifle around one of their MTH (Match Tactical Hunting) bullets. I met with Jude and Durvin of their R&D staff and we discussed calibers, barrel length, twist rates, single feed vs magazines, and other aspects of building a rifle. It was really helpful to get some direct advice from people in the industry. Looks like I'll be going with a 338 Edge shooting their 275 grain MTH.
Then they gave me a tour of the whole facility. I got to see the Swiss lathes they turn their bullets on, their equipment they use to make sure their bullets are within spec, and got to handle a lot of their products. They hold their bullets to super tight specs for consistency - .4 grains, .0001 inches in concentricity, and .00015 inches in diameter. I also learned that their BC values are about as true and accurate as you are going to get from any bullet manufacturer. They have put up the money for an Oehler 43 system, which measures the BC from velocity decrease over range, and is much more accurate than calculating it with a formula or bullet drops.
If I left there with just that information I would have been happy, but at the end they even invited me to come shoot long range with them when my rifle is built! They also sent me on my way with some free swag - I got a box of their PHD 45 ACP ammo and a box of .308 cal 100 grain ESP Raptors for my general hunting rifle. I should be able to push those to some pretty wicked velocities in my 30-06 for deer.
Start to finish it was a terrific experience. The whole staff was very nice and welcoming and they were willing to help me out in ways I would never expect strangers to do. I left there with some new shooting buddies. I would encourage anyone to go check them out
