Most accurate .277 bullet in 1:8 twist Shaw barrel 270 win, hunting?h

I talked my hunting buddy into rebarreling a Rem 700 270 win. I will not get into details about who did the barrel etc. It shot well during break-in but has not gotten much better at around 100 rds. Groups are 1" at best, 2" at worst. Better than the factory barrel by a good margin. I was super happy with the first 30 rounds or so - -groups were good enough that I assumed they would get better.

I am shooting some 145gr factory seconds from Midway. Look like 145 Hornady ELD-X bullets. They did not identify what they sent. These are a year or so old. Over H4831sc BR-2 Primer. Got them for the OLD barrel. Which was pure old Rem ****. It never shot anything close to 1"

Anyhow -- the gun looks nice and we have a sentimental attachment to the gun. I need a new .277 bullet to try. We value accuracy over velocity in this gun.

If you had to choose a bullet for accuracy (hunting is a secondary consideration, since its for whitetail deer that are pretty easy to kill) what should I try next? Gameking? Berger? I want to try a bullet that is known good for accuracy.

I think the easiest bullet to get to shoot was the hammers.

Noslers 140 accubonds,Hornadys 130 sst,130 Noslers ballistic tips ,Barnes 130 140 tsx's ,Hornadys 140 spbt,Sierras 150 boatail.

140g Accubonds are very hard to beat for accuracy in any 270…
150g ABLR are also a great bullet.

They are just always the easiest to find a great accurate load for and as a hunting bullet they are as good as it gets.
Something like this.

I have a 270 wsm, it shoots most 130 gr bullets at .6 or better, thats Berger Vld-h, Nos AB & BT's, but shot Berger Classic Hunter's at .4. All with 58.2 grs of RL16. Try a Berger, and test 60 to 75 thou jump. Although the Classic Hunter's .4 moa in mine was 15 thou jump, in all my 700s Bergers seem to always have good accuracy between 60-75 thou jump. H4831sc did ok in my m70 270 wsm but RL16 was excellent. H4350 would be ok with 130s as well if you don't have RL16.
I switched to a 129 LRX but had to up the charge slightly. The 58.2 gr of RL16 load is a moderate charge getting 3089-3187 fps depending on bullet, in my 270 wsm. But in a 270 win max is 54 grs with a 130 gr, according to manufacturer. Do a ladder test, 50 to 54 gr in .3 gr increments at 65 thou jump with a 130 gr Berger Classic Hunter, find max and a speed node to start with and go from there.

I got a custom 270 with a Douglas barrel . It shoots a dime group at 100 yds. I have used 140 gr yellow tips but prefer 130 gr for better down range ballistics. A boiler room hit _ on a deer at 260 yds had a good sized exit wound , with the 130 gr . It's my take down rifle and I would even hunt elk with it. I hit a hog coming out of the woods 300 yds in the front right shoulder, an bullet went straight through hog an exited _ left rear hindquarters. I do prefer my model 10 Savage 308 accu trigger, but this trigger is just as good.

I shoot 145 ELD-X (not seconds) and they are extremely accurate. Maybe the factory seconds you got are dimensionally inconsistent?

Might give the "Nozler 150 gr Ballistic tip"? Used them for a Number of years and served very Well. On Elk out to Aprox 450+/- yds!

The 130 gr is all I use ( since 1982 imr 4831) for ballistic performance down range. The trick is to use a LEE FACTORY CRIMP TOOL, and don't load it hot. Check and make sure C.O.L IS CORRECT, for chambering so you can keep the bullet from touching the rifle lands.

What are the details on the barrel, did you go with a faster twist, or stay with something standard for a 270?

My dad's late 70's vintage model 700 likes the 150gr sierra spbt a lot with a healthy charge of imr 4831. The only other bullet we've ever shot through it was the Sierra 90gr hollow point.

I've been begging him to let me rebarrel it with something heavier in a faster twist to shoot the newer bullets that are available but he's got zero interest in that.

I wouldn't be shocked if the factory seconds you're shooting had something to do with the lack of accuracy you are experiencing. I've had enough trouble with hornady firsts, much less their seconds.
