Great news.
Things are going in the right direction.
'specially since ID is looking to increase the number also.
Its turning out to be a bit difficult to find a wolf on purpose. Happenstance seems to provide better odds of success.

Yes, But if Elk hunters have a wolf tag in their pocket they can wound one... aaa , I mean shoot one.

There was just a ruling here in OR that says we can't shoot any! even though we have been having atleast one livestock kill a week in wallowa county. The **** feds are getting involved again in local game management without any specific knowledge of the subject except for the estimated number of wolves in the state. I think the ranchers up there might go varmint hunting and mistake wolves for coyotes!

No I am not sure of non-res tags... you would need to look on the MT FWP site.
The problem getting permission on private might be that the season is also during big game season. So ranchers may not want you in there.

Oh I can understand that . The reason i had mentioned the ranchers is because i figured they could tell you exactly were they have seen dead steer . I wonder if it would be legal to bait and hunt them . I can tell you how the cattle farmers would handle it were I'm from . But then again I would say the same way Montanas ranchers are probly already handling it

350 Dollars over the counter for non-res wolf, shooting wolves of a dead cow is considered baiting.
You can get on ranches to shoot wolves all day long around here but it's not really needed, most of the wolves run between ranches and public ground.Most of the guys I know who got one with a tag called them with coyote calls, but you have to hand blow, you can't use electronic calls.

Everyone please be sure to keep the tag in your pocket and hunt. Lets hope this year the quota never gets filled. If it does we have to quit hunting wolves for the year and all wildlife looses if that happens. Please don't fill the quota. 186 wolves will never be missed in this country. At this point we must kill 3000-5000 wolves to even begin to make a dent in the massive wildlife losses we are seeing here. Moose are extinct now in areas that were thick with moose and that took 100 years and millions of dollars in restocking programs. Many areas that were full of elk and offered great hunting opportunities now do not hold huntable numbers of animals due directly to wolve predation and to a much lesser extent calf losses due to the explosion of grizzlies. The following is a direct quote from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Federal wildlife officials are perplexed because of the significant decline in bighorn sheep populations in the mountain ranges surrounding Yellowstone and Teton parks. We have ruled out wolf predation because our research indicates that wolves don't eat sheep". When we get this kind of ineptitude from the feds it forces good citizens to make the right choice and eliminate the problem.

MT is partially playing it safe with the quota because they want to keep the hunt going and out of Federal hands so they are playing politics not game management is the answer. Some are sympathetic to the wolf but they will bow to politics and there are fewer and fewer people in love with this number of wolves.
I have a uncle that is a big time PETA member and thinks sport hunting is evil, though he thinks subsistence hunting can be needed but on his last trip to check out Yellowstone he is firmly for killing large numbers of wolves, he saw almost no elk and no grizzly and at least he's not so far gone that he can put two and two together and see that the Canadian wolf has no place in our local ecosystems.
LTLR is absolutely right about using your tag, and if you have to put a tag on one shoot an adult, shooting pups makes no difference, shoot adult breading females and males will disrupt the pack and make the rest easier to get.
The ranchers are taking care of it with poison and guns but the wolf was not removed in this country by some people killing them as targets of opportunity, they were remove by the long line wolfer with traps and poison and there was a bounty to get with every set of ears you turned in.
Make sure you go and buy a package o Xylitol artificial sweetner. Sprinkle any gut piles with the stuff. This will cause a low blood sugar level in the wolves and kill them. They sell it at the feed store in town here. If you feel the need to even go one step farther, buy some chub burger and mix some in, make some large meat balls and freeze them. When you go out for a hunt or hike, make sure to take time to feed the wolves in your favorite hunting areas. One thing, this stuff is deadly to canine, so don't let your dog get into it or he will be a gonner too.

bassin93, I can appreciate where you are coming from. But man I hate the thought of what else might eat it. I have ran hounds for years. I sure would hate to think I killed one of someones Cat hounds. The hours of training and the feelings you get for that special dog can not be replaced. I will pass on this one
