Mauser action questions

I'm not new to rifles, but am new to maybe building one. I live in Alaska, and the winters are brutal, but it will give me the time to build a rifle before next summer. I acquired a Mauser GEW 98 action at a local gun show as a base to build my rifle around. I have been looking at the cost of the tools and parts to put together a rifle that I can shoot out to 1000 yrds I am starting to wonder if I'm on the right track.
what do you guys think? should I continue down the path of building one, or would I get a better rifle by putting the action in the closet and buying a good rifle?

I love the Mauser I've got, but I wouldn't go that route again. There are quicker routes to where you want to be.

If a Mauser action is what you really want I'd opt for a commercial FN over a military action. You are likely gonna spend a lot of money getting that action to be what you want it to be.

This guy http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/members/mauserhouser/ will be a great source of info through your project and he is a **** fine Mauser smith too.
