Matrix Bullets - Thumbs Up

I'm doing well, I was asking about the 8 twist because it is available and the right taper. I am still up in the air about caliber but one of the two, elevation here is 1650ft but I usually hunt around 7000ft.

I used a 165 matrix in my 270WSM to put down a wounded elk in a cornfield....shooting through standing corn 30-40 yards. The only thing visible was his antlers and a lot of thick corn, I guessed at where his body was and got the job done. The matrix at that range and having gone through an unknown amount of obstacles managed to reach the spinal cord on the bull.

A 9 would work clear down to your elev. but that doesn't mean an 8 wouldn't work just fine. Who knows; maybe Marshal will come out with something in the 180 range:D! I have been impressed with the 150 in 6.5. I get plenty of penetration and lots of tissue damage to boot! I still want to connect on something at the 1000 yard range though. Maybe now that I am in Utah my opportunities will increase considerably...........Rich

Elk in a cornfield? Thats a new one for me haha!

Yes, we have elk in cornfields, they come out of the short pines and live in the center pivots when it gets tall enough. The elk pictured came out of the corn to a hoochie mama call. He then decided to go back in and was hammered with a 230OTM from a 300RUM. He wasn't going anywhere but wasn't done for either.

He was well fed from the alfalfa in the next pivot...:)

I think I might wait until I can get a 9 twist, a 175 -180g would be nice. Maybe Marshall will come up with one. I have a few hundred 165's to use in the meantime!!

Dang now I'm second guessing my memmory, I don't have it loaded in this phone but I'll check my other one tonight. Haven't got everything transfered yet.

His shots were 150 to 200 yards. They dropped right where they stood. Their bodies absorbed all the energy of the bullet. It was certainly amazing to watch through the binos.

Rhian,

I gathered from somewhere that 0.336 G7 was being used. That's what I've plugged in. Well, see what it works out to be out of my motley rig....
I thought this was for the 175gn G1 .680 G7 .336 dunno but thought I had read that after they were first shot. The .720ish first reported was a little optimistic The 175's are no longer listed on the site and I have no experience shooting them to verify that. I'm sure if you email them they would give better answers than this though.

I double checked and I was running a G7 of .336 on the 165 but I would not take that as gospel, don't know where I pulled the .318 from but I'd say take that .336 number with a grain of salt, we've come a long way in recent years in that now with the velocity from a Magneto speed and shooting some simple drops were within a few points of BC to what Litz is getting.

I think these will work in my 270 WSM!
