magnum research carbon barrel.

PR makes their own barrels, MR wraps Criterion. I can attest to at least one of their barrels, well 2. My 280 shoots great and its a simple garage gun. Some championship was won with a 308 bull barrel of theirs, can't remember the match but I think it was nationals.

Kreigers are cut barrels, CBI's are button pulled 2x stress relieved. Knowing what I know, I would not hesitate to buy another CBI. Savageshooters have a lot of feedback on these barrels.

The difference in price is making me lean towards the MR. Also how they wrap the barrels is more appealing to me. My research tells me the MR's are stiffer than PR's b/c of wrapping methods. The weights of the MR's doesn't seem impressive at first but they are 1.2" straight bulls, so compared to equal diameter, even fluted, they are dramatically lighter and stiffer.

Z, how easy was it to work up loads w/ your MR barrel? I imagine it was easy due to its stiffness. Here is my in the makes project: MR 24" barrel, battlecomp brake, 700 action w/ a jewell all in a mcm A3 sporter edge adl topped w/ a nikon 5-20x44 (19oz). I think this should bring me in at 10# or less.

I think it would easily weigh under 10 lbs. Bathroom scale says 8.5-9lbs. I think mine is under 10 with everything but a bipod on it and it has a 32oz NF on it. Plus my barrel came to a finished length of 27". load work up went fast after it was broke in.

2 groups shot on the same day right after the other. 7 saum. Norma brass CCI250 primer. H4831sc 180 vld berger. 100 yrds first group is a 3 shot and second one is a 5 shot group

Beautiful rig. And a shooter too. Well done sir. Do you mind posting the build info? I can't tell what stock that is.. Do you know if that metal cap on the end of the barrel will allow a muzzle brake? Thank you for posting the pictures.

It's not a cap, it's actually the end of the barrel. You could put a brake on it.

ZSteinle - Do you know the specs on their sporter contour? The bull is a straight 1.2" correct? I need to call them again, I have a full list of all the barrels they had a couple months ago.

i dont know the specs on the sporter and the bull is a straight 1.2. i know the sporter was only a few ounces lighter so i just went with the bull. Plus the HS stock that mine sits in was made for that barrel. Cant rememer the model number but its a rem 700 foot print with a barrel channel for a full bull barrel. I was originally going to build a 22-243 but they didnt offer a fast enough twist in 22 for what I wanted. Then i was thinking about a 7mm-338 lapua but didnt want to burn out such a nice barrel so fast, so after reading the story on the 7 saum that is on 6mmbr.com i decided to go that route on 700 long action so I have tons of room for the 180 bergers. Mine for some reason seems slower than most though, if i remember correctly i am pushing the 180's at 2820fps. the only reason why i can think of that mine are slower is that i am using norma brass instead of rem and its thicker so there is less case capacity.

MRI makes Great products I proudly own two of their rifles, 1st bought was an mri mountain-eagle 270 Winchester 24 inch 1/10 twist cut-rifled Krieger bbl mated to the new them sako action sitting in a hs-precision stock. prior to my purchase they used bell n Carlson stocks.

2nd bought was a Limited edition MRI varmit rifle offered in only 222 Remington or 223 Remington, I choose the 223 but before I bought it I called the factory and talked to the production manager Jim TERTIN and asked him how accurate the limited rifle shot, he said and I Quote their shooting5 shot groups into 1/4 moa @100 yds with federal premium ammo. this L edition came with a flutted ss varmit weight cut-rifled Krieger bbl 1-14 twist sako new action all siting in a varmit style hs-precision stock.

I couldn't be Prouder of these two fine rifles , ps the carbon wrapped bbls came years later. my 270 cost 1,000 us. the 223 cost 1,360 us.

don't forget MRI also made the lone-eagle single shot pistols and many other fine products those that bought them know the QUALITY Congrat's MRI!!!!!

great topic thanks and regards jjmp:)

The sporter MR barrel weighs 3.1# and I think the bull weighs in at 3.45#. THey are both offered in 24" or 26".

I'm working on putting together a 300wm but I want to keep the weight down. MR 24" bull barrel, 700 action, mcm a1-3 edge. I'm also gonna ask my smith to trim some weight off the action. Not sure what glass I'll put on it, but for now I have a monarch 5-20 that weighs in under 20oz I think. Any opinions would be great.. thanks

I lightened up my 700 action on my 7 mag mountain rifle. all in all not sure if it was worth it. Sure does look cool. Maybe saved 6oz

Mine looks similar to that. I took too much out of the bolt handle and its uncomfortable to manipulate. They way that they pull the weight out of the bolt knob is the way to go. Like the remington Ti looked. I took out the enire knob center so its just a hollow knob. I really like some of this guys work.

I have a ptg one piece bolt coming so probably not a lot I can take out of the handle, but I'm going to add a carbon knob.

Any updates on your build? I'm curious about the weight. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a MRI .270 sporter barrel for a build but I want to make sure it'll be under 7.5 lbs. Rem 700 action and a Pendleton LRH stock.

I couldn't make myself to settle for the MR sleeve bc I wanted a 5r so I went with a fluted bartlein med Palma. The wait on the mcm and the barrel are about the same. I'm not familiar with the pendelton stock but the MR barrels are 3lbs+ so with a 700 action at 2.5lbs there isn't much room.

I have a 300wm savage with a sporter barrel and edge htg and it weighs in at 7.6 scoped. But that sporter is about 2lbs lighter than an shaw magnum contour and the MR barrels.
