Powder question Which one

If you are fishing for a bullet to use on an elk at 500 yards, you will get various recommendations based on personal experience and preferences.

I was a long-time Nosler (NP, NAB, NBT) before transitioning to Berger as my go-to bullet.

No sir, Im not fishing. I am sorry, I know my responses seem like I am. I have an Idea what I want to use. This past year I killed my bull with the 168 bergers in my 300. I want to switch to a heavier for caliber bullet. I want to shoot the 215 bergers, But with a 500 yard limit Bc really doesnt matter. So My thoughts switched to possibly a monolithic, push it hard. Flatter trajectory, and arriving with authority. I love shooting heavier bullets for elk. I plan for a tough angle. For Ex, a hard quartering to where I will slide that bullet up a little infront of that shoulder. So I keep my impact velocity at 2000 fps and above.
In my 338 edge I shoot primarily 300 grn bergers. That is my go to for longer shots.

So maybe i I look at
190 or 200 LRX , 200 accubond, 196 HH, 190 CX, or the Cutting edge 200 MTH.

I want to compliment my 338

So, what's stopping you from using it? My .300 WSM 24" propels the 215 Berger at 2850 FPS. Your 300 WBY has much more case capacity to send the 215 Berger with more authority. You also have the 220 and 230 Bergers for 1:10," and the 245 Berger for 1:9" barrel twist.

My .30 Lara (.300 Jarrett Improved) has 28" 1:9" Lilja 3G.

(LR: .300 WM. .300 WBY, and .30 Lara).

Nothing really, I always second guess myself though. I will work up a max pressure test with the 215's.

I had berger send me load data for the 215's. Now to find. Powder that I can get 100% burn from my 24 inch barrel

I have been using RL-17 for over 10 years now without any issues, so I have the longitudinal experience and successes behind it. However, be forewarned that some might convince you not to use it because it is supposedly a temperature-sensitive powder. I stopped worrying about it for some time now. Instead, I adjust accordingly for when I do my load development and my hunting environment.



My takeaway from Bryan's video starts at the 1:40 minute mark and what you do with it. Good luck!

I've noticed with LRT on my .338 Norma is the velocity isn't really there, but it's an easy powder to find. It may be too slow for the 300, but test it. Use the 200 gr data and work up, since your using a lighter bullet.

Thank you! I learned something! So if I understand him correctly Single base powders are more stable and are effected less by tempature. So Vihtavuori N100 series powders are more stable than N500 series! That is different from what I have read or what people claim. I obviously believe Bryan Litz over others .

Yes, but the key is, how you prepare and adjust from when you develop your load vs. your hunting environment. I do my load development in second week of September for my fall hunt in October/November. Usually, 10-25 F colder during my hunt.

So Vihtavuori N100 series powders are more stable than N500 series! That is different from what I have read or what people claim. I obviously believe Bryan Litz over others .

Yes, however, when I asked VV for their powder sensitivity, below is what I got.

I did find a sheet when LRT came out for the 300 weatherby 200 grn 92.0 grains of lrt. But no 190

With the 215 bergers I am entering a reloading realm of experimentation. Acording to Vihtavuori N565 is a great option for the 300 win mag all the way from 165 grns up to 230 bergers In there reloading manual.

A couple months ago I emailed VV for some data with N565 and 180 accubonds. This is what I have come up with so far.

VV reloading manual 2023
300 winn mag Nosler 180 BT
Powder = N565
Starting load= 70.8 grns
Max Load = 77.5

The load Data VV emailed me
300 weatherby 180 Accubond
Powder = N565
Starting Load = 77.2
Max Load = 84.8

So what I am going to do is look at 300 winmag N565 load data and drop the max load. And cautiously work up by there by .2 charge weight to find the max load in my rifle.

For Example:
300 Win mag
220 Berger Long Range Hybrids
Max load with N565 is
Max= 72.2

My thoughts drop max load by .2
And start from there
300 weatherby 215 Berger
Powder = N565
Starting = 72.0 grns
And work up in .2 grns until I find max charge.

What do ya'll think? If I Am stupid please tell me. There are way more knowledgeable reloaders out there
