I have a Rem 700 LH that I picked up in 7mm Rem Mag for a donor action. I have a Remington takeoff barrel in 8mm Rem Mag that I want put on the action. I want the writing on the barrel to be indexed just above the top of the forend like it normally is from the factory. I am afraid to take it to a local smith that I have not used before and get it back with the writing end up on top or underneath despite my instructions. I have heard some horror stories from other guys. I know that all the gunsmiths who post here seem to be top notch guys who get the job done right. I'm guessing that getting the barrel put on that way might require cutting back the threads and reaming out the chamber. If any smith reads this post can do the job correctly, please PM me. Anyone else with a good suggestion feel free to post here or PM me as well. I don't mind shipping it off to get it done the right way.

Thanks!

Sam

Even your local smith should be able to do that. It is not any harder than indexing a brake, and even trial and error will get you there.

We aren't exactly covered up with gunsmiths around here who install barrels and like I said before, I have heard some reports from others that do little to instill confidence. I'm probably going to have to ship it to someone, so it doesn't matter if I am shipping it 200 miles or 2000. I don't want to get my rifle back with it looking like crap and having to face trying to get my money back then getting it fixed.

I'm certainly no expert but I would think that getting the barrel indexed would be more involved than indexing a muzzle brake due to the chamber having to be properly headspaced as well as the writing being lined up right. I could be wrong, though...been wrong a few times before!

Headspace will have to be adjusted anyway, thus the probability of a need for a reamer. I am just a hobby gunsmith. I build guns for frinds for free and even I could do what you need with no probelms. Any smith who does barrel work should be able to handle it. There are several great smiths here I am sure one of them has time to squeeze you in.

Thank you, Kevin Cram!
