You don't need a guide to pig hunt in California. There are PLENTY of pigs on public land.....good luck getting anyone to tell you where they are though! That being said, my ratio is about 5:1 private to public land. I pay for a Tejon-like setup these days - huge ranch with a hunting club, only 30 members. Obviously not as big as Tejon, but it's still got plenty of room. And the annual cost is equal to about 5 days of guided hunts. I can hunt pigs, deer, turkeys, quail, and plenty of varmints. I'd look at some leases or hunting clubs before shelling out $1k to kill one pig. Get out there and enjoy the outdoors hunting some public while you save up to pay your membership dues next year. You won't kill anything your first day, but you'll have a great time figuring it out and that pork is so much tastier when you finally get some after all that hard work!
