Being off work with a bad back I am in the process of putting together a long range rifle in 6.5x68
I have got the action and barrel sorted but the scope to many choices
I would like to fit a nightforce or leupold (6-24x aprox) on it but out of reach at present time how would a 4-12x do for starters

I currently have the Weaver Super Slam 3-15X50 on my savage 112 25-06. I also have the Nitrex 2-10X50 (a super slam by another name) on a Savage 12 223 these scopes are awesome. I highly suggest the EBX reticle. The Zero reset on the turrets might be the best I've ever used and as a plus they lock when you're not turning them. I am highly impressed with the scopes for the money, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

P.S. I'm sorry earlier I didn't see you were in NZ I hope you can find Weaver's Top line there.

112Savage,

I'm looking into a similar set-up. What ring height did you go with for your 50mm scope?

Aaron

I was using Millet medium rings and bases but the 50mm objective wouldn't work with them. I ended up switching up to the Leupold High rings on top of the Millet bases. I was glad I did this because with butler creek caps I had to trim the underside slightly to clear the barrel. I'm a big proponent of low mounted scopes, so going to the taller rings and larger objective was hard for me, but I love these scopes.

I will attach some pictures of my 112 FLVSS in 25-06 Remington to give you a visual.

Wow,

The 50mm looks so big on your savage. I just ordered the Weaver Super Slam 2-10x50mm with EBX reticle for my Savage Weather Warrior. I ordered the Weaver Grand Slam Base and High Rings. I was almost going to get the elite 4200 3-9x40 but decided to go with the Weaver. Hopefully I made the right choice as the elite looked like a nice scope and I haven't found as many positive posts about the Weaver - guess it's not as popular.

Your post definitely spun me in the weaver direction.

Thanks for everything!!

Aaron

FWIW, I have a Nitrex TR One 10x42 bino and 6-20x50 rifle scope. I use the bino for hunting and am very happy with it. I put the scope through a rigorous test on my optical bench - resolution, glare, and reticle tracking were all good for that price point. Micrometers were accurate, too. Made in Japan.

Since you are building a long range rifle do you think you will have enough adjustment in scopes that have 1" tubes? This is why you need to use higher rings for the 50mm objective scopes.

I had a 40 MOA Picatinny rail made for a 1" tube scope and it got me out to 1,000 yds., but with a 20 MOA I would not have enough adjustment to get to 1,000 yds.

I don't know how far you plan to shoot, but you might consider a 30mm tube scope with a 20 MOA Picatinny rail with low rings. This would get your scope lower and give you enough adjustment to get to 1,000 meters. and beyond.

I would suggest you get a scope like I have and set it up like I did. It probably cost you 1/2 the price of a Leo or NF. I also think that mine will perform just as good as the NF and better then the Leu IMHO. You can get the scope in MOA or Mils. You probably will be more comfortable with Mils.

If you can not get a scope like mine I suggest you get a NF with the NP-R1 reticle, but be sure that the turret clicks are Mil and reticle is also Mil. This will cause less confusion when figuring come ups to long range targets.

I removed the smaller bubble level after the one on the scope tube was adjusted
correctly.

PS: This one is like mine except it has Mil clicks and the reticle measures in Mils also:

For the OP's 6.5X68 going 3100fps with a berger 140VLD he should only need about 21.9MOA to get to 1000 yds from a 100yd zero. The weaver 3-15X50 has about 42MOA adjustment. From dead center, this would be pushing the abilities of the scope. The EBX reticle can help here since it is subtended to 7.98MOA with dots and then @ 14.6 MOA for the post.
The vortex is a much more expensive scope, and per the original post he is looking for something that won't break the bank, and still be serviceable.

Also, can somebody comment on whether 15X is enough for long distance as I believe that was also part of his original question.

112Savage,

He also said he would like a NF or Leo in the future that is why I suggested the Vortex PST because it is almost half the price and end up with a much better scope then the Leupold and equal to the NF IMHO.

joseph

PS: He may not be able to get the Vortex 6-24x50mm PST Mil / Mil scope in New Zealand anyway.
