If you were to design your own "ideal" LR action, would you opt for front (on the bolt face) or rear (near the bolt handle) locking lugs?
The closer you can get the lugs to the cartridge the better.
Safety is another reason.There was a time that rear locking lugs were used for one reason
or another ,but as pressures increased failures increased.
Very large guns/rifles like the military uses have the locking lugs machined in to the barrel so
there are no receivers to deal with., just the breach block.
When rear locking lugs are used there is more flexing of the action at firing (not good for
accuracy).and more compression of the bolt allowing head space to increase at firing.
Most modern "High pressure weapons have front locking lugs'' and use the bolt handle as a backup
to hopefully keep the bolt from coming all of the way out if a catastrophic failure occurs
