Loads for the Savage 111, 1-14 twist, 22-250

Hi, I am a newbie on here and found it to be the best forum. I am loading for the Savage 111 in 22-250 with a 1-14 twist. Just looking for some good accurate load for Coyotes and groundhogs out to 500 to 600 yards (that's where the challenge is). I am kind of favoring the 50 gr, Hornaday V-Max with Varget or H380 powder Also, I hear great storie about Prarie dod shooting and coyote shooting out west. I am located in maine and don't have the long range open shooting there is in the western states. If anyone could offer me a good (great) place to shoot pd's and coyotes during these winter months I would be most grateful.

35.5-36 grain benchmark ; 50 grain balistic tip. win brass and primer. accurate(1/2") in all the 700s we have shot it in. 3911 fps

Thanks for your reply. That is the area I was looking at. You didn't mention the powder you use. I am using Varget and sometimes H380

are you sure you have a 1:14 twist barrel? All Savage barrels I've seen were 1:12 or 1:9. I shoot 36.0 grains of IMR 3031 with a Sierra #1365 bullet seated .002" off the lands. This load will shoot in the mid to low threes in three different Savages, and with one of them it will shoot in the very low twos or high ones every once in awhile.

You caught me at a bad time. You are right. It is a 1:12 twist. I was thinking of my Ruger 77 with a 1:14 ( I think). It is also a Model 11 and not the 111 as I reported. I just loaded a few (to test) 40 gr Nosler BT's with 38 gr. of Varget. It is at near Max and I have shot them before with no problems showing up. The only issue is the jump to lands as I show about .080 from tip of bullet to lands. I don't have an issue with that if it shoots 1/2 MOA or better at 100 yds. I can play with the load to get it to perform out to 400 yds on groundhogs and the occasional coyote.

I am still looking for advise from anyone who can steer me in the right direction for Western Coyote and P-dog shooting. I haver a brother in Colorado who claims to have great PD hunting.

Thanks for that bit of info. My primary cartridge will be with the 50 gr. Hornady V Max and Winchester brass and WLR primer. I am looking for the right load to push it with and your suggestion looks good . I will give it a try.

try that Sierra # 1365 bullet load with the IMR 3031 powder. The bullets are almost dead perfect for the twist rate, and really group very well. A good starting load is about 33 grains of powder, and I found 35.5 to be the sweet spot for accuracey. I'm going to give 2460 a try this spring (I ain't setting on three inches of ice to find out) at a very dense loading. The manual recommends 36 grains, and I think I'll start at 34.5
