Was wondering if anybody has work up any loads with hodgens 50bmg powder a amax bullets. For a state arms 50bmg.

I have not loaded for the state arms but I use these componants for my LAR and will tell you that while Hodgdon lists a max load of 233.0 gr for the 750 gr A-Max. My rifle will blow a primer pocket at around 227.0 gr.

My LAR has the match chamber but it is not overly tight. Start in the 205.0 gr range and work up from there by 2 grains at a time and after every shot rechamber the fired case to check on pressure levels.

At around 50,000 psi, cartridge brass begins to permanently form under pressure. At this point you will begin to notice the force needed to close the bolt on a fired case will begin to increase.

The 50 BMG should really be run in the 50,000 to 55,000 psi range in shoulder fired rifles so once you feel the force needed to close the bolt on a fired case getting noticable, your getting in the area you want to be.

My top load is 223.0 gr in my LAR which produces right at 2720 fps in its 36" barrel. My match loads are loaded with 212.0 gr.

Good SHooting!!

J. Jones,
My gunsmith has had a 50 bmg improved reamer for about 10 years! He says that it will push a 750 Amax at 3350 from a 32 inch barrel. I have held the round in my hand and it is AWESOME! It eliminates all the case taper and looks like it is ready to kick some serious butt! He has reamers, dies, and all the know-how to put one together for you! His name is Brad Stair and he runs a shop called, "performance guns". He's from Texas, then moved to Colorado, and now he's in Utah.
He also has reamers for the 408 Chey Tac improved!

My old States SWAT likes 215 grains of H50BMG and like Fiftydrivers LAR it will not take 233grains of the stuff with CCI primers and LC or WCC brass. It is imposible to get to the lands with 750Amax but most seat it off the lands a ways anyway.
For all practicle perposes surplus 5010 or 872 will getr-done as good as H50BMG and is a whole lot cheaper.
No experience with the improved vertion but it would have to be heavy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifThe other States in the Safe went the other way and was neckt down to .375(MachV)4550fps with a 250 grain Barns and still working on it.

I know that this is an old thread, but, can anyaine cofirm or deny this 3350 fps thing?! 600 fps is ALOT to gain just by improving a cartridge. Is this possibly a misprint? If not, what is the case life on one of these thngs like?
