Lightweight compact rifle

I'm looking for a smaller rifle for packing around.
6lbs with a 20-22 inch barrel, with a brake or at least threaded. Calibers in 243, 257rob, 260, 6.5 creed, or ???
I dont have any particular rifle in mind. Though I have had my eye on an older rem model seven .260

Remington has a 6.5 Creedmoor in model 7 now with HS stock not threaded 6lbs Kimber also has rifles in all cal with threaded barrels at 5.5 lbs short actions savage also has light weight rifles just to name a few good luck trying to pick one

I have a brand new Savage Lightweight Hunter in 6.5 Creedmor at the shop getting my scope mounted. Those guns are shooters. I just picked up a Savage Ultralight in 6.5 PRC, so I'm not sure if I'm going to hold onto it or not. It's got a Trijicon Accupoint 2-10.5x56 with green mildot mounted on it. If you're interested DM.

You are right about savage they are shooters I have over 25 savage rifles most with original barrels also I replaced several barrels with aftermarket the savage nut makes replacing barrels a snap

I should rephrase. Im looking for something a little less factort, and a little more custom.

Besides that. I know i can always find a nice handy factory rifle that fits what I'm looking for.

I've also been toying with the idea of buying an Action and a pre-fit barrel. And putting something together myself for the first time.

This sounds like a great idea. Get what you want. That's the best reason to go custom.

I have a rem model 7 in 7mm-08 that is a caliber not to overlook as well.

My personal favorite not on your list is my Mark V Ultra light 257 WTBY Mag great round light but a longer barrel then you wanted. I also have a couple super lite tikka's that are great rifles.

My other ultralight is a semi custom on a tikka action 20in pencil barrel in 6.5 Grendel. I use it for about everything but elk anymore. Compact light and laser accurate.

With so many choices now I would think it would come down to your choice there are several that would meet your criteria. Good luck and let us know what you pick

Caliber may not be quite the power that you're looking for, but I recently built a Howa 1500 Mini in 7.62X39 that weighs 6.9 lbs scoped (2-7x Leupold Lightweight in Talley mounts) and slung (Blue Force with MSR type flush swivels). Bought the lightweight barreled action from Brownell's (NLA from them), it comes w/o threads, but there are other barrel weights that do come threaded. Used a significantly lightened Boyd's laminate stock and bedded it with Devcon AL putty. I installed flush swivel cups in both sides of the forearm and left the 'normal' stud on the bottom of the forearm for bipod use. It is due to get some dedicated range time soon, but early cold bore shots were very encouraging.
Could easily build the same rifle in 6.5 Grendel.

Sounds like you should place a phone call to NULA. New Ultra Light Arms. Do a search on the net. You will not find a single negative about his firearms. Melvin Forbes is an incredibly inventive gunsmith. He builds everything in house except the trigger and barrel. Each caliber has a receive built specifically for it, so no wasted weight...The rifles are designed to the be the lightest AND most accurate rifles made. I tend to believe the hype. After using one - I ordered one. It is a great sub MOA shooter. And the lightest .300 Win Mag I own.

I have a Kimber Montana that I just love. It's in 7-08 and worked perfectly for my elk last year. Easy to carry, easy to shoot and very lightweight. I've done very little tinkering with it. I bedded the recoil lug and ensured there was no binding of the mag box, etc. It's a great choice!

x2 for the NULA, when mine showed up to the local gun shop the owner didn't even think there was a rifle in the box lol. If you call NULA Melvin himself always answers the phone and will help you in any way. I was the same as teesquare, I shot a buddys in 7-08, three shots in one ragged hole. I started looking for mine the next day. I got lucky and found one used in 30-06 and snagged it up right away.

Based in the caliber range you posted, take a hard look at the 6GT.

I had a M700 SA in the safe not doing anything and decided to give it a try based on research and local opinion. It will do anything the .243 can and is MUCH more efficient and very easy to tune.

I went with a 24" Bartlein in sendero/varmint profile and the McMillan Game Warden and its still feels handy and light compared to my other larger calibers.

With a shorter barrel and a few other weight saving options, I could see it done easily @ 6lbs or less.
