Go to Backpacking Light and search for tarp photos. Lots of UL backpackers use tarps.
Personally I'd only use a poncho if it was an emergency. And then it would be a Gatewood poncho which is larger than military ponchos and meant to be a shelter. Go to You Tube for a lot of articles on the Gatewood Cape by Six Moon Design.
