Lapua 6.5 cm brass srp. Any issues with non bushed firing pin?

I have both sizes using SR primed brass.
No issues with either.
Reading the primers with the larger pin is not as easy, but a good magnifier helps with both in any case anyway.

Cheers.

Hey guys,

Wanted to see if any of you had any issues using the srp brass with a regular firing pin set up? Been thinking about trying it.

Bushing a firing pin solves the problem of a sloppy fit, It has no effect on primer piercing one. Piercing a primer is normally caused by, to much firing pin protrusion, to much firing pin spring compression or a thin cupped primer.

Small rifle primers leave more case head support on small case head cartridges because of the extra case head material so they can improve primer pocket life if loading hard/max loads. There should be
no issues with a standard firing pin setup bushed or not.

They are not recommended for larger cases with large case capacities because of the slower burning powders need for more priming materials and larger flash holes. Like everything they have their place and benefits if used in the right circumstances.

Just My Opinion

Thanks is JE..... as usual your opinion is always welcome and helpful!

If your firing pin is a loose fit in the bolt face, you'll get cratered primers even with factory ammo and it makes pressure reading primers difficult. I don't think pin diameter makes a lot of difference with small primers as long as it is tight in the bolt without excessive chamfer around the firing pin hole. I had a Remington 700P in 308 that would crater every shot. A Remington trademark. Had the bolt bushed by GreTan Rifles and the primers are slick as a baby's butt now.
If using small primers, use the CCI 450's. The cups are harder than the 400's.

My early 2000's Savages and prior with SRP brass, need to be bushed, maybe/maybe not worth the cost, so those use LRP brass.
My late model Savages, have smaller firing pin and better fitment, and don't pierce SRP primers, at higher charge weights, no bushing work needed.

U will be fine brother. Running cci 450s in 6.5 lapua SRP brass in 6.5, 6 and 22. None of them are setup for small firing pin. I run my loads on the republican side of powder charges so a little warm! Never had an issue but a little cratering, have yet to pierce one yet!

Republican side that's hilarious! I run my rifles on the warm side. I'm leaving Peterson because the case head seems alittle soft. I cant break 2800 fps with 140s other than rl-26. I was able to get 2810 with the 150 smk. Normally in hornady brass I could run 2850+ pretty easy with h4350 or rl-17.

See, folks talk trash about the Hornady brass, but I too, can get 7-8 full power loads, before they're trash and for what a bag of 100 cost from Mid-South, I'm good with that value. I'm liking the Alpha SRP, more and more, but my go to is Starline LRP/SRP.

I've never really had issues with hornady other than it's not as consistent as the others I've tried. Right now I'm on 7 firings with Peterson and I'm going to have to start culling a few but most of them still have life left in them.
