kestrel question

I was reading in the instruction manual on how to set the reference for altitude, and baro. from my understanding you find the baro for your area (either internet site, or airport) then on the altimeter screen you input this as your reference. then let the alimeter settle into a reading, then go to the baro screen and input the altimeter reading as your reference.

a good friend said he understood that it was important to set the altimeter screen reference to 0?

from the people that use the kestrel, whats your thoughts?
