Can anyone tell me about the 1000 and how it operates? Do you just hold it and I will measure constant wind speed. Does one hold it and spin all the way around to get the max wind or just hold it pointing at the target and that's what it put in my ballistic data calculator? I hope I explained it right. Thanks.

I don't have a 1000 so take this with a grain of salt but I'm pretty familiar with other Kestrels. From a quick look at the 1000 I think your going to get max wind speed by pointing the back of it directly into the wind (just like any other Kestrel) and then your going to have to figure out if it's a full value, half value etc. It doesn't look like it can lock wind direction and target direction and spit out a solution like say a 5700.

Basically all it's doing is giving you wind speed. It's up to you to figure out what direction that wind is coming from and how that wind speed/ direction is going to affect your trajectory.

So I would just spin in a circle and whichever way the wind is the most that's the direction it's coming from directly, then punch it in my ballistic calculator whichever clock position it's coming from, example the heaviest is from the 4 o clock position and log it into my calculator. Am I understanding this?

Yes, but you probably don't need to spin in a circle you can probably isolate it to about 30 degrees just from feeling the wind on your face etc.

Remember a Kestrel is only accurate to as long as your arm is so unless you shoot somewhere with very predictable/stable winds it's a great tool but there is also a good chance the solution isn't going to be perfect. It's very useful for getting a good handle on what different wind speeds feel like and how they move trees, grass, mirage etc.

That's the info I needed. Thank you very much. I think I will buy the 1000 just to get a handle on the wind speed. The rest I will learn. Thanks again.

For not a whole lot more money the 2700 is worth a look. It's still pretty basic but has some useful features compared to the 1000. If you're just looking for a basic wind meter check out weatherflow.
