I just acquired a Sako 257 magnum rifle with 1-12 twist I have been reloading for years but not having much success with finding correct bullet weight. Tried 120gr and thought I would go to the other end of spectrum and try a 60gr. However, it appears to short for proper overall case and bullet length. Hornady 60gr FP. Open minded so have at it. Please. Thank you.

Try 90 to 117 gr. I have a Howa that only likes the 90 gr. And won't shoot the 117 gr worth a dang.

With a 1:12" twist, I wouldn't go heavier than an 85gr cup and core or an 80gr mono. That is a SLOOOOW twist in a .257. 1:10" is the old school norm, good for the 115/120 range.
80g Barnes TTSX for the 12 twist, Barnes said it should work.

Just looked up the Hammer bullets and the 81gr stone hammer has a recommended twist of 12. Their load data shows Accurate 4350, H4831 and Ramshot Magnum as suggested powders.
I recommended these bullets because I have used all of them with success from a couple of different Sauer built 12 twist Mark Vs. They gave good accuracy and terminal performance from 1200' of elevation on up.

Not all 12 twists are the same, I had a Shilen 12T in 25/06 that would not stabilize a 100g Nosler ballistic tip, 100g Sierra btsp, nor a Hornady 100g btsp. This particular Shilen 12T would stabilize the 100g Sierra flat base and the Sierra 117g Flat base would shoot in the 4's at 3300 fps.
My friend's 30" Hart 12 Twist in 257 Weatherby with zero freebore would stabilize the Sierra 100g Match btsp at 4000 fps, shooting at an elevation of 6000 feet.
Is the Sauer built, 257 Weatherby a metric measurement on their 12 Twist, where they rounded to 12?

Hard to say. I think they were built in the 60s. I never actually considered stability would be an issue in 100 grain bullets or less back when I was shooting these. If I still had either of those rifles I would check the actual twist.
