Hey Guys,
been reading up on the 6-284 caliber, and I have the itch for one. Would like to gather up all the parts 1st, then decide on a gunsmith to put together for me. And of course, I would like to do it relatively on the cheap. Remmy 700 short action, quality trigger and barrel. good, free floated and bedded stock. I know cheap and quality dont go together, but I dont have $1000 or more for a custom action. Please give me some suggestions on where to get started.
thanks.

Buy a used Savage with accu-trigger, call McGowen, Pac Nor, or Lothar Walther for a Savage Replacement Barrel and get it pre-chambered, pre-threaded for your action. Buy the Wheeler Engineering Action wrench and Barrel Nut wrench and a go and no-go gauge. Screw it together by yourself and have at it. Easy process really. Purchase a B&C Medalist A1/A2, Carbilite, or Duramaxx stock. Will be the gun of your dreams for a budget. EGW Base, Weaver Tactical rings, and a Vortex Viper, Bushnell Elite 3500 5x15, Nikon Buckmaster 6-18, or a Weaver Super Slam will do nicely for glass.

You'll have to check and make sure they have the reamer. Otherwise you may have to see if a smith in your area may have reamer. If not, then you'll have to order a reamer. At that point you may as well have a gunsmith cut the thread and chamber. If that is the case then you will run in to extra cost whether you order a blank or have it built for you. At that point the barrel wrenches aren't worth the cost unless you want to build other calibers off the same action. Check with those 3 manufacturers. Shilen may have one or a 6mm blank for sale at Midwayusa.com. You could save money there.

McGowen offers the 6x47 Lapua. I've been told it is like a .243 on steroids. Pac Nor offers 6x284 in two different neck diameters. Looks like Lothar Walther offers the 6x47 Lapua and a 243AI. Looks like Shilen offers the 6x284 also. So you have some choices.

I currently own a Lothar Walther pre-fit, but I paid extra due to some custom things I asked for. All the prefits for a Savage range between $295 to $350.

I own 3 and all are rem 700 in 243 opened up. The factory rem barrel will work fine, have a buddy who is a non advertised smith do the work for $100.00. Each gun will shoot 1/2 moa depending on bullet.
