Hey LRH friends, ive got a question for you fellow gunsmiths out there. What, if any, experiences have you had with registering with ITAR for the manufacturers fee? Good? Bad? How long did it take? thanks in advance

It is a royal PIA! The Trump administration is in the process of completing the "Initiative" that was begun in 2009 to transfer common "defense" articles (like sporting arms and ammunition) to the Dept. of Commerce. No more ITAR after the process has been completed. The NSSF has all the pertinent info on this.

My buddy at ATF Tech Branch said that he knows of some gunsmiths that have gotten an exemption from paying ITAR as it is currently regulated because they wrote a request stating that they had no intentions of doing international business. Apparently, it's not a cut and dry process and luck of the draw as to whether they grant it or not.
