I am looking at a pss in 308 26" barrel....are these accurate guns...do they still make them? I cant get on rem website to check....whats the going price? thanks

Yes, they are excellent rifles, and no, Remington no longer makes them. Regardless of them still making them, it's still a 700. Parts are always readily available.

Very accurate. I have one in 308 also. This past weekend I was able to put 5 touching at 200 yds. With handloads. (175gr. SMK, 42.5grs. of Varget, CCI BR2 primers) The only thing I did to the gun was change out the factory trigger for a Timney.

My 308 PSS with 26" barrel might a bit longer than what many would want to carry in brushy areas or over rough or steep terrain - but it's definitely the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

The PSS is a bit longer than I like and my favorite is the LTR Light Tactical Rifle which has a 20" barrel and it shoots quite well for an out of the box production rifle.
You can get them new in the box on Gunbroker quite easily. Don't know if they're actually still making them or not but last I looked was just a few months ago and I saw several.

They are not called 700PSS now. Remington call them 700P.

Someone with a better memory than me can possibly shed some light on where the PSS moniker came from but as long as I can remember it's not been what Remington called their "P" model...
The LTR was always the LTR best I can remember.
The cartridge choices for both seem to change fairly often but as long as I can remember the 223 and 308 chamberings have been available.

It's been years since I sold one, but I'm pretty sure PSS stands for Police Sniper System.
I believe you are correct....It's been 11 years since I sold a gun, but we sold a TON of 700's. And lots of LTR's and PSS rifles. I'm pretty sure the LTR was only offered in .223 & .308. Same goes for the PSS, but I believe you could order it in a .300 WM, as well.

The PSS in remington PSS stands for Police Swat Sniper. I own two, the .308 and the 7mm rem mag. They both are excellent shooters. The remington 7 mag is my go to gun for almost all shots up to and including 100 yds. It works very well with the seria boat tails, I love the 168 gr. berger in this gun as well. If you shoot bought bullets only, black hills will put you in the .5 moa range with this gun and the right scope. I wish like hell I had their .300 win mag version. I have a friend that has one and it is just as good as my 7 mag and it comes with the extra weight and added balistic coeficient. My only complaint with the .308 is that it doesnt get used as much as the other, and the barrel is shorter. In my opinion, these rifles are great for long range. The remington 700 p is a different rifle, though has many of the same features though.

I own one chambered for a 7mag. Great shooting rifle! From what I've been told, I've got to agree with Muddrunner, PSS stands for Police Sniper System(just what I've been told). All in all it's a great shooter, can't say nuttin bad about it. Just my 2cts!!

I was wrong in my oringonal post. The PSS stands for Back when this model was named, it was intended solely for sales to LEOs, it was named the Police Sharp Shooter (no major gun company would be so naive as to name their gun a "sniper" rifle).
Later, as normal folks started to get ahold of these rifles, it was decided that even "Police Sharp Shooter" was too un-PC, and the name was changed to 700P, with the P indicating a Parkerized finish (per Remington), NOT "Police".
I had to go digging through boxes to find this one out. Like I said, for the longest time I have been calling it the police swat sniper rifle and was wrong.
What ever it is called, the ones that I have are shooters for sure. I would love to own one more, the .300 win mag. After that, I would call it quits though. Even though they say that the p version and the pss version are the exact same thing, I have a buddy that has a P model, and his is different. They are small suttle differences but differences none the less. I like the PSS version and have not come across one that I could not make shoot.
There are those that say that these are crap rifles, I have 2, a couple of buddies own 2 each, for a total of six rifles, and not one of them is a poor shooter. In fact, each one of them is an exceptional shooter, 1/2 moa or better with the right loads fed to them. If you have a chance and want a long range shooter, I would snatch it up in a heart beat.

I was just goin by what I've been told, the name was. Whatever it's called, when a man does that much rescerch to find out what it's called, I'm gonna be on his side!! Great job!! Like I said before, it's a great shooting rifle(whatever it's called) if you have a chance to but one,Buy It!! I even learned something out of this post! Thanks for the info!!
I ment, if you have a chance to buy one, buy it!
