been looking up powders and came across a thread where h1000 is used you could use imr 4451 has any one tried it in a 6.5 prc or where would be a good place to start for a possible load with 4451 shooting 153 gr bullets?

I'm pretty sure you could look at 6.5 x55 data in the Hogdon book and scale up I think the 6.5x55 is 59g of H2O where 6.5prc is 62g of H2O. While that is 3 whole grains that is only a 5% increase from the 6.5x55. also keep in mind the 6.5x55 is a lower presure round than the 6.5prc. if you look at the Hogdon 270win data it has 4451 I would stay clear of the max 270 load for 160 bullets for comparison to 6.5prc (case capacity is more for 270). Or you could give me that 4451 and I give you a pound of 7977

Hogdon book starts the 150sierra in the 6.5x284 at 41.9 of 4451
And the 142sierra at 39g of 4451 in 6.5x55 (a larger case) so if I were you (don't listen to me)I would start at say 42.0 or 42.5 and send-it on up

Max for 6.5-284 is 47.1 but they shoot up to 48.0 of h4350 (almost the same powder data wise)
Oal for 65-284 is 2.930 with that bullet. I would shoot up to somewhere between 47.0 and 49.0 but I also like to live dangerous. (Read pressure carefully)

Just remember to start with starting loads and work up, brand of brass, bullet length and seating depth can impacted pressure significantly. I have found myself 2 whole grains above published load data with no pressure sign and I have also hit pressure 2 whole grains s below published max.

Thank you for all the info I did look at the 6.5x284 and seen they use it also with the 300 wsm and that's the same case as prc except the prc is a little shorter. Also they have a load for the 7mm which also use the slow powder. I emailed hodgon says the 4451 is to fast for it. I am very curious to try it sense I have a lb of it and very little of h1000 and I have seen the 4451 come in stock a lot more then the slow stuff.

Just remember that the "same case" with a bigger hole in the front (65prc vs 300wsm) can run more of faster powders with heavier bullets without hitting pressure than the case with the smaller neck can. example of how a 130g bullet in a 308 can have a higher charge of faster powder (say 4064) than a 260 can have of the same powder. The reason is because of the Venturi affect.
Also there is a difference between SAFE and OPTIMAL. There are lots of SAFE option that are not in the book because they are not optimal.

I am using h4350 in 7mm mag because that's what I have and I don't want to use up my 4451.
I know a guy who is using 4064 in 300win mag.
I also plan to use 5744 (223/44mag powder) in my 7mm mag to make reduced loads. If I can use H4450/4451 in 7mm mag you can most definitely use it in 6.5prc.

Remember the manufacturer wants you to use what is OPTIMAL because it helps them sell more product.

Ok that's some good thought I would like the best lol but when ya can't get the good stuff ya have to use what ya got lol I also plan on the 4451 for a 7mm-08 load to. If I could make the 4451 work till I can find some slower stuff for optimal load it's practice 😁
