How to remove EPOXY ?

I have a 1903 Springfield with an epoxy issue.

Rifle has been fully refurbished and reparkerized. A Lyman 48 rear peep sight had been installed at one time. I would like to take it off and fill the holes with plug screws.

Upon removing the rear sight, I found what I believe to be 2 epoxy 'pads' stuck onto the side of the rear receiver ring.

I am wondering how I can remove this epoxy and not hurt the finish?
Any ideas?

I have heard only two ways. But would not go about this job with either with out someone with first hand knowledge. One heat and the other is freeze the barrel action.
