Hornady OAL Guage - Tap/Thread

Its not something Ive worried too much about in standard calibers as long as Im not jamming the lands the difference is minimal.
But when I had my 25-06AI built thats not a case gauge Hornady offers so I had to use the standard case but had to make extra sure Im not jamming the lands. It worked out for my load, but I want to know exactly in case Im off and too close and just getting lucky.

I prefer not jamming bullets to the lands, and I still prefer a case fire-formed to the chamber. Below is virgin .30-06 virgin brass. I prefer my modified case fire-formed to the chamber - all of mine are - standard and wilcats.

You can send a fired piece of brass to me, It takes less than 2 minutes in my lathe. I'll have it back out the door the same day. I do them for all of the custom rifles I send out the door.

Question - does anyone here have the ability to tap/Tread a case for a Hornady OAL guage? I have a fired 7SAUM piece of brass I want tap/thread. Send me a pm and price if you have the ability.

I sent two fired 7STW cases to Hornady . They did it and sent them back. They only did one . I guess they have you send two in case they screw one up. It was like $20 return shipping included.

I do my own OAL gauges on fired case for the specific chamber. Chuck the die in my lathe and drill it with a letter K drill bit then tap it. Works great

I have a specific bit of advice for this thread. For the folks that want that fully blown out case so that their CBTO measurement is correct.

Do NOT assume that a once fired piece of brass is fully stretched out and formed to your chamber. You should use a 2 or even 3x fired piece.

You can correct for the disparity, sort of, using the Headspace gauge (the one that measures the shoulder) but that not truly as accurate as a fully blown out case..

Me, I have decided that narrow margins to the lands is rife with too many inconsistencies.

I've used the Hornady OAL gages for years and they work fine as long as the modified case is fire formed to YOUR chamber. It's nice to have access to a lathe and proper size collet to hold the case while drilling and tapping. Every rifle I own has its own fire formed and modified case. The rifle info is laser etched onto each one to make ID simple.

It's an older pistol case with foam that I cut to fit.
