Makes sense to me. Chemistry works in many ways to improve our daily lives. I used pickled eggs to create methane gas. My wife can vouch for me.

Looks like a Carbide light. They were used by coon hunters and in the coal mines. That just looks like a hand version. In on compartment you have acetylene tablets and it is mixed with water to form a gas source that burns to provide light.

This is the first time I have posted on this site even though I have been watching for over a year!...
This gadget is a little blow torch.... fill one side with lighter fluid, (or both) and the heat from the flame makes the torch even hotter... that screw cap comes off, there is wick material inside, light it, the flame comes up and is 'blown' by the curved neck part.
My dad had one when I was a kid...lol....

It's a flatulence effluent pressure tester and tire pump w/ jet. It makes farts sharp enough to go through your shorts without tearing a hole in them. You can also use it in an emergency situation to fill up a low tire.
