I have an older Remington 700 BDL in 25-06 that I want to rechamber with a 338 barrel. I am having a little trouble tracking down information to help me make my choice.
I want an improved 30-06 case variant but, I guess I should consider the 338 WSM. This rifle will be used for heavier game, initially Elk, at moderate ranges (under 400 yards).
With the 338 WSM I would need to modify the bolt head. Is that hard or expensive?
I'm thinking I will use Pac-Nor since I want to keep the cost reasonable but, I'm open to other options. I'm not looking for a >$2k option so, please keep reasonable cost options in mind.
The rebarrel options I see at Pac-Nor are:
338 Brown Whelen
338-06
338-06 Ackley
or
338 WSM
Does anybody know what the differences between the 338 Brown Whelen and 338-06 AI are? Or, what would be gained with the 338WSM compared to these two?
Thanks in advance!
Sid
