Help in Iowa

I just got a new rifle that undoubtedly shoots better than myself. It is a 7mm STW, all custom, topped with a 5.5-22 nightforce. I have a deer hunt in Nevada coming up this fall and would love to take a shooting course to learn more about distance shooting, but it just isn't in the cards between now and then. Under 500 yards I feel good, but past this my confidence starts to drop off. I am 100% sure it is the shooter and not the gun, but would love to pick the brain of an experienced distance shooter for suggestions, tips, etc. Is their anyone in the area (Iowa) who feels like helping a beginner out? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks- C.C.

Naw...it's an old 'worn out' cartridge and just won't cut the mustard anymore! I can't get it do do any better than this at 800 yards:

Does pretty much the same thing from 1000 yds. and **** good from 1200 yds.

Can't help you out with Iowa but it might serve you well to attend one of Shawn Carlock's shooting courses.

Report On Defensive Edge Long Range Shooting Class

The main thing that changes for you between 500-1,000yds is wind. Depending on the terrain and weather you can have the wind change as much as 3-4 times between shooter and target at long range and so accurately doping the wind becomes incredibly difficult.

If you have taken the time to work up to a good accuracy load and have a ballistics calculator the doping part is easy once you learn to read the wind.

The other part which just takes a lot of practice is learning to get really steady with a consistent mount and really good discipline on the trigger. The further you shoot the more every error is magnified down range.

What part of Iowa are you in? If you are on the west side and willing to drive a little we can probably work something out.

...So which is it? An old '06 like the picture description says or is it a 7mm STW?

"My old '06 target rifle with 1-10" twist Hart barrel and 190 gr. VLD with 12 rounds fired from 800 yards. Don't think it's quite 'shot out' just yet!" Thats the description on the picture when you click on it.

Well...it's definitely NOT the 7STW! I don't like changing barrels every 1000 rounds!
