I am needing a good hard hitting accurate load for a .308 168 grain berger bullet. i have looked and looked and cannot really find anything so if any one has a good load using 168 grain berger vld bullets let me know.

thanks.

what rifle? what are you shooting at?? for powders- i 4064, varget and re-15 in that order.

the rifle will have a mauser 98 action with a medium/heavy barrel 24". and will be shooting mainly whitetail deer and pigs

You might look back in this forum I worked up a load and several other members gave me some some starting points. My load ended up 43.5 gr. of Varget load @ 2.810 with BR2 primers. Good Luck

Why the 168g? If you want more punch pick a bigger bullet its that easy.

Well depending on the distance at which the game is hit, the heavier bullet might not be the ticket when its superior wt is offset by its inferior velocity.

168 grains is a pretty big bullet. Considering the mild powder charge available in the 308 case, I think it is about perfect for the 308 with a balance in vel and wt.

Well I get that but thats why I mentioned bullet selection. I would go with a 200g SBT or something along the same lines. He is not hunting TREX just deer and hogs.

I have just made up a load with 45.5gns of ADI AR2208 (similar to varget and IMR 4320) with 168gn A-Max's and this shot 7.8mm groups(0.3"). Have not tried on game yet but have heard the A-Max performs well. And have used the 162gn A-max in 7mm rem mag with good success out to 600yards. Hope that helps

thanks for the replies but my question still hasnt been answered what does everybody recommend for powder? and what kinda velocities are people being able to achieve with 168 grain bullets. i am looking for a good starting point and something worth working with. i would like to find something where i could push the bullet around 2800 to 2900 fps with a 24" barrel if there is anything out there that can get me to that point.

thanks.

Powders were adressed re read

WALD- I do not have a 308. but i have loaded for them. its advantage is it is very forgiving. ( generalization) . it is easy to get an accurate load. i woud use varget and a 168 balistic tip . then use its accuracy and consistency to do the work. i shoot 50.5 grains in my 30-06s. use a little less in yer 308. i think my brother uses a 150 baltip and 49.? of varget or 4064.

I have a good one for my 300 win mag if that would help
