Can you mix the 2 together to make the same? Has anyone done this. Have a buddy that did this and he says no problem. He had partial bottles of each and just mixed it..
I hear its the same just cut shorter?

I would never mix powders. That can be a one time only mistake. However, your statment is correct. The powder formula is the same. The difference is that the "sc" stands for short cut. The shorter cut meters much better than the standard cut. I use the 7828ssc in a couple of my ultra mags. You need that efficient metering when your dumping 90+ grains. If you did dump them together, you would be losing the benefits of the shorter, more consistant charges.

I am not a powder expert, so I may be wrong. I ultimately defer to experts. Here is my understanding:

Powders with different grain lengths will burn slightly different. This is due to the different surface area (think split logs vs whole logs). The H4831SC is formulated slightly different from the "standard" cut to account for this difference (and thus make them equal in terms of burn rate).

If you mix them, I would guess they would average out??? -BUT- I personally never guess on anything related to reloading.... I am creating a controlled explosion 6 inches from my face/eyes..... Not worth the convenience of consolidating powders IMHO....

The way I would do it, with the above 2 powders, would be to use one until the amount is to little to work with. At that time put the small amount into the other container. That way only a very small % is mixed in.

This method would allow one to safely use every bit of powder.

The short cut is a little faster- so if i use 69.0 of h-4831, i use 68.0 of SC. roughly. i do not mix them.

unless your loading loads that are above what the loading manuals give for a max load your not going to run into trouble doing it. Ive found they do shoot a bit differnt. One gun may like sc and one the old version a little better for accuracy. the biggest problem i could see is if you found a majic load that is better then anything youve come up with it will be real hard to duplicate it. If you using it just for practice loads or plinking it will be fine.

if it were two totaly differnt powders id probably agree with you but most loading manuals dont even differentiate between h 4831 and 4831sc. I might be a bit nervous if you were dumping charges with a powder measure instead of weighting charges but if your weighting them i doubt your ever going to get in trouble.
