Good day all.
Name here is Rob, and I'm from the town of Weaverville, in California. I've been sort of lurking around for a while, reading articles, and finally decided to join.
So, some back story here. My desire to learn the art of "long-popping"(as a friend of mine calls it) started about four or five years back. I was out deer hunting with my mother in a fairly popular spot, and the only place we could find to hunt where we would have more than ten feet of space to shoot was at the top of a clear cut. From where we were, there was about a thirty foot wide "shooting lane" for lack of a better term, and about three hundred yards to the tree line. There were little trails crossing all across the hill, so were were hoping a buck would use one, and make it to us without getting nailed.
Unfortunately, the only buck we saw that night was in the tree line. And, my only rifle was an open sight Winchester '94. I couldn't even see the deer through the sight.
Since then, I've bought a newer rifle (Ruger American 270), and a 3-9x scope, but haven't come across any deer, mostly due to "political issues" that I won't go into detail about. At the local range, I can consistently shoot 2 MOA groups (I'm calling them 2MOA, but it's mostly 1/2 MOA, with a flyer). The problem is, our range at the moment is only 110 yards. They are working on extending it to 640y, but that won't happen until September. In Californee, deer season starts in September.
Now, on top of the Ruger, I'm building an AR-15 that I can use for various things. I intended to use it for coyote hunting, but after reading some stuff on here, I am thinking that a 75 or 80grain bullet in 223 would make a decent deer round, out to 200-300 yards, which is just about as far as I'll be able to shoot here. I'll also be using it for some fly-shoots, as well.
