Good morning. i own a fierce fury rifle in 7mm rem mag. this rifle will be one of two rifles coming with me on a hunt this year. I want to train with the fierce rifle i own off a bipod and prone. Not looking to buy another rifle. I am looking for a good budget friendly factory round that i can take to the range to shoot paper/steel up to 500 yards. Something from hornady or federal. I have it zeroed with Barnes 160gr but it canbe expensive to shoot these all the time. What can you guys suggest that will be a good practice round? thank you

I didn't quite understand if you're wanting a similar rifle in a less expensive caliper for practice or a different rifle as a backup to take along hunting.

If it's to practice I would recommend a .223 or .308 so that you can purchase match quality ammo at a reasonable price. If it's a backup rifle in 7mm Rem Mag I would suggest a Tikka.

ill try and edit my post but i want to practice with my current rifle. im not looking for another rifle. I have the fierce rifle already but just want to practice with it more. i want a factory loaded round from like hornady or federal to shoot at the range that is not $40 a box.

For the 7mm Rem Mag I think the only way to accomplish this is to reload or have a friend that reloads make ammo for you.

I reload but what I do throughout the year is shoot other rifles. Some of which I can purchase reasonably priced ammo too. Then when hunting season approaches I'll spend more time with the hunting rifle and ammunition - shooting from hunting sort of positions.

Based on deviating from your hunting round, I assume you're just looking for trigger time. Add mentioned some, practice fundamentals with a 22lr or dry fire practice.

If you're actually looking to improve wind calling, range estimating, etc, you really should use what you intend to hunt with.

I would second a cheaper gun and round to practice. Yes it's helpful to shoot that rifle but I practice with a .223 and 6.5 Grendel a lot. Mainly because if you shooting that much you will end up burning out the barrel of you very nice hunting rifle. As stated above I switch to my hunting rifle just before I go on a trip.
Buy a cheap rifle and put a decent trigger in it to practice.

Second the Hornady Precision Hunter eld-x recommendation. I practice with it and hunt with it. If you use AmmoSeek you can find it for $29-32/box, and by selling the brass you can reduce that cost. You can find Privi ammo for half that, but it won't perform the same and so your practice time is less beneficial.

Take a look at the bullet you want to shoot and then reload it to as close a match to the factory round as you can. Get the reloading book for the bullet maker. They have tons a info.

i get what you all are saying.
i do reload for certain calibers but i have not gotten into reloading for this one. i have only shot about 25 rounds through the rifle.
i dont plan on shooting out the barrel by hunting season. i would like to put about 300 rounds of practice to get comfortable with it.
as for another rifle to practice with, i own a few weatherby calibers, 30.06 and a 6.8spc in an AR platform

So basically you are asking what is a budget friendly factory ammo that will still work for a distance that is a regular qual for the marine corps with a m4/m16.
I phrase it like that not to be a dick but because with a 7mm mag you can use about anything effectively if you do all your short range work and dope well. That being said the hornady eld series from the data I got had pretty decent sd and es for factory ammo.
I'm not sure if $34 a box is what you are looking for or not.

I just purchased three boxes of the Sierra Game King in the calibers I'm going to shoot. THese bullets are one third the price of the hunting rounds I'm going to shoot. Perfect for practice, it won't beat up the wallet.
