Long story short, my 17 yr old nephew was in a bad car accident a few weeks ago. His buddy had just gotten a new car and they took it out on a friday afternoon. My nephew was the passenger and his buddy crossed the center line and hit someone head on....my nephew woke up from the fire, was somehow ok, pulled his buddy out of the burning car, and did CPR until a passerby stopped and took over for him. His buddy didn't make it and my nephew has a fracture somewhere in his neck - but he got a clean bill of health from a spine specialist last week and he is cleared for all activity, including wrestling, immediately. Obviously this has been very tough on him, and while he is cleared physically, he will have mental scars that last a lifetime.
He loves to hunt and his father doesn't hunt, so I have taken him hunting several times and he shot his first deer with me 3 years ago. My 12 yr old son and I went on a doe and hog hunt in Oklahoma earlier this month and next year I am going to take him with me and my son. I'll tell him on Christmas and he will be super jazzed. My son and him have already been texting about how fun it would be but they don't know I have already lined up the hunt.
I am also going to surprise with his first deer rifle and I want it to be a classic looking gun. I went with a Remington CDL and am going to get it accurized and a new barrel installed, plus a trigger, cerakote, bedding, brake, etc, and going to make it a 30-06 (which is what the new CDL I just purchased is chambered in). He will not likely get into LR shooting but this will be a gun he can keep for a long time, and it should be a shooter with Snowy Mountain Rifles doing to smith work. I am going to give it to him on the hunt next Dec, and cannot wait to give it to him - he will be so excited.
I am on the fence about which cerakote color...Midnight Blue seems like the substitute to make it look like bluing, or I could do black. Or I could get the whole thing reblued and look basically like stock other than the brake. The benefit of cerakote is that the metal gets a lot more protection. I've also thought about doing a silver to look like a CDL SF....curious what other people's thoughts are.
What finish do other folks think would look the best?
