Well, after my wonderful Bull Elk this year, I had one last tag to fill. Grouse Creek area, Utah cow elk tag. Apparently I waited until they blew out of the area to start hunting. 4 trips, only one 5 point bull seen. Lots of gasoline and time burned, got stuck in a snow drift for 10 minutes or so, lots of below zero temps, etc. I called in a few favors, and got ahold of the Wildlife biologist, and the Wildlife officer and got some info on where the elk go in the winter. Unfortunately, most of them go to Nevada. Anyway, they told me to check the south end of a certain basin, so out we went today. Season ends next thursday, so with my work schedule this was the last day for me. Lots of fog, 200 yd visibility or so. My buddy and I were talking about how they could be 300 yds away, and you couldn't see them. As we started down a little canyon, the sun was threatening to show, and the fog started to dissipate. Donald says "oh, like those elk there!" I thought he was teasing me, because we were just talking about it. Sure enough, about 8 or so 200+ yards away. Stopped, grabbed the rifle, found the biggest one and let her have it. Drove the 4wheeler up to the ridge, and found a bloodtrail Stevie Wonder could follow! 168gr Barnes LRX MV3260fps from a 7mmSTW right behind the point of the shoulder. Liquified the heart, and some of the lungs, and exited about the size of a golfball. She made it about 40 yards.
BTW, I tried to range it after the shot, and there was too much fog to get a reading.

Awesome job, pin wheeled her. How you liking the 168 grain LRX? Good tasting meat. BTW Pm me your address i got some 168 LRX and will send you one back.

Thanks Riley! Loving the LRX! dope is right on out to 663yards. Two for two on one shot kills on Elk. Consider the one I sent you a gift. Keep shootin well! gun)

That is an absolutely WOW hunt experience! Great job. I'm ordering 7mm LRX's and seeing if they shoot in my gun. I'm still very much a 3 digit shooter/hunter. I loved the job it did, it must have traveled 20-30 inches to exit and golf ball size exit holes are my favorite size, not too much, just right.

Congratulations...

Dang, you let the juice out of her!!!gun)

Uh, yeah!!!!!! You should see the 40 yards of bloody snow! I'm surprised she still had blood in her body when I gutted her! I could post pics, and a video, but it's kinda......bloody

Like others have said...... I find it funny that I acquire an LRH gun, buy very expensive glass, do the load development, practice out past 600 yards, and kill less than 300 yards!!!! This cow, and my bull almost made me feel like I was cheating being that close! Oh well, there will come a time when I will drive away from a 300 yard shot back to 600 yards just to make it fair! :D

I would love to see some pics and a video. If you dont want to post them here could you email them to me at [email protected] ?

Good going on filling the cow tag, good shootin.......Helps remind some of us we need to do that yet and this week:rolleyes:
Dont worry the long range practice is never wasted.....Just used when nessissary. Heck I bow hunted goats year before last hard for a month, practiced with the 7mag to 700 yards just to shoot one @ 35 yards with the 7 mag=It happens:D

Keep practicing, I want to hear how the 7 lrx 168's do at 600+. The bullet sounds like a winner. If you have pics or a video, I'd like to see them [email protected].

Thanks and Congratulations.

Meat in the freezer, it looks like a pretty healthy and good sized Elk for eating.
