I have 2-2.5k budget for a new rifle. I'll choose a mild caliber (7mm-08, 6.5 PRC, 280 AI, 270 wsm etc). I plan to use the rifle as both a primary and backup for anything up to and including elk size. I'm out of the loop these days (spent the last 10 years black powder) and I'm looking for recommendations on quality rifle manufacturers.

It doesn't include optics. I plan to address that after selecting a rifle.

call Alamo Precision and have them build you a Maverick. they run 2500 and will shoot .5 to .25 groups depending on if you reload or use factory

There are a lot of "factory " rifles to be had for that price and quite a few customs. It's really surprising to me how many small shops there are making sweet setups. Maybe try nick at straight jacket. He seems open to thinking outside the box. I'm planning on him putting together a 6.5 Sherman for me. If you just want to buy without choosing anything but chamber and color, a little more money can get you a cooper 92 backcountry. 6 pounds and their chamber list is impressive. 6.5x06 imp and 280 ai caught my attention.

Out of curiosity - I keep reading mixed reviews about Kimber, Christensen, & Montana Rifle Co. What's the general consensus?

My wife's main rifle is a kimber stainless select in 280ai. 3 shot 3/4" at 100 every time with 150 partition. Its the only centerfire kimber we own and very happy with it. Others have had bad experiences with kimbers. We got lucky. The only negative is the round next in line gets nicked on the lead nose when the chambered round is fired. They also stopped making this model.

Personally, I would have a semi-custom built. You can put together one for less than $2500 using quality parts and a quality smith. Remington action $350, match grade stainless barrel $350, Grayboe/HS/B&C stock $300, bottom metal $150, TriggerTech or Timney $150, Hawkins brake $50, labor for barrel install and fitting the muzzle brake $300-400, labor for fitting the stock and bedding $300-$400. Grand total $2150 at the max and that will be a serious shooter too.

I've been looking at all kinds of stuff over the past 2 months - Sako, Browning HC, Seekins, Fierce, etc. I think I'm settling on A Daniel Defense Delta 5. I'll
get it with a 20" .308 bbl initially and will buy the 24" 7mm-08 bbl later. I've just gotta figure out a way to get it past the Senior Houshold Executive. If I don't screw Valentine's Day up, I might get a deposit down on one Saturday.
