If an electronic powder dispenser (like the Chargemaster) states it is accurate within 0.1gr does that mean it will do within 0.05gr each side of your set charge? Or does it mean it will do 0.1gr each side of the set charge weight for a total range of actually 0.3gr?

Example; lets say we want a charge weight of 55.5 grains. Will they throw a charge between 55.40 and 55.60? Or will they throw a charge between 55.45 and 55.55 (for a TOTAL of 0.1 variance)?

Just trying to justify if it's worth getting an electronic powder dispenser and scale combo. Because if it can only get within 0.3gr (0.1gr either side of the set charge weight), then I can throw kind of accuracy with my powder measurer and honestly that would be just as fast.

Thanks! :)

To add some additional clarification; I do currently have a digital powder scale. I do realize that most likely the RCBS, Hornady, or Lyman electronic scales do not display down to the 0.XX decimal (I'm assuming). Still curious on my original question above. Thanks!

As I understand it, it's +/- .1 grain just as you noted above; 55.4 - 55.5 (nominal) -55.6. My current set-up is just the one on the video and very pleased with it ...

.1 grain on either side of the set charge (55.6 - 55.4 = .2) is .2 grain. I think most of us did as what you're doing now; the combo I have is so much easier.

There's a lot of accurate and high dollar set-up out there compared to my modest set-up but I am very pleased with mine and IMHO, worth the investment ... but that's just me. Good luck!

Cheers!

P.S.

You might want to consider to have Len/Admin move this out of the classifieds ... just a thought for your consideration.

40, I have a Chargemaster powder thrower, use it for bulk loading.223. For precise loads in hunting/target rifles the 10-10 beam scale is the only thing I trust. Read a post here from a professional electronic scale tech that services scales daily. He stated a trustworthy electronic scale starts at about $600. I've checked throws from the thrower on two beam scales and just can't trust it for precision work. Like the speed for .223 and will continue using it. Makes me wonder how accurate factory charges are.

Thanks Feenix!

I'm not even sure how this ended up in the classifieds. Thanks for pointing that out. I will see if I can get it moved.

I agree. Currently I trust my 505 beam scale more than my electronic scale. However I've read that even beam scales can fluctuate 0.15 grains up and down.

I load enough rifle ammo, I think I'm going to go ahead an get either the RCBS, Lyman, or Hornady powder dispenser. I at least have to try it or I'll always be wondering what if...

I have used a Lyman and RCBS. I think the RCBS is better as far as consistency for me. I often see mine .1 over according to it. That equates to about 2 kernels of extruded powder. And that is from metering issues with extruded powder or bumping the tube like in the above video. When I use it to check my RCBS thrower it shows it is on either side. I have read some good reviews on the RCBS and it was compared with a higher end beam and faired pretty well compared to others in its price range for speed and accuracy. I don't have issues at 1K with powder charges hitting 12X24 steel...I believe my issues come from other factors. Is it perfect...no..but certainly manageable.

Take a look at the 6mmbr websites guns of the week. Charles Ballard shot a national record 1K yard group loaded with a charge master. He gets single digit es and sd. It lays out his loading procedure and provides video of him loading 5 rounds and chrongraphing single digit es/sd. I"m betting it can equal or better my 30 year old 10-10 scale. Got one on the way! Good luck guys

I remember watching a video forever ago where David Tubb stated that your primer hole and uniformity of your primer pocket have more to do with accuracy, ES, and SD than a few kernels of powder. I think maybe I put so much emphasis on exact powder measurements because it's one of the easier things to measure when reloading. Some of the other variables that probably affect our accuracy just as much are a little harder to measure and thus quantify.

Charles Ballard doesn't uniform the primer pockets till after the 3rd loading and then anneals necks as well. Go figure!

This is a 5" dot @ 1K so .5 MOA
I shot this 5 shot group with a bipod and rear bag on a bench

my shooting partner took my loads and my rifle and shot this 5 shot group from a benchrest rig.

That's terrific! Thanks for posting!

I agree but I am curious what are the rifles and spec used too.

1 rifle used for both groups...2 shooters and methods
Stiller Tac 30
Bartlein 6.5 1:8.5 chambered in .260 Remington. Think it is Sendero Profile
Manners T2A with BO chassis.

Cool, thanks!

The point I was getting at is that, there's more to it than the electronic power dispenser alone, i.e. ... :):Dgun)

Not sure what the NUT behind the trigger on this video is using for powder dispenser but he did extremely well too considering he was shooting a factory rifle ...
