Wanted to share what I learned long ago and still use with my simple Duplex scope. Even though they are simple, with accurate ballistic app data and understanding subtensions you can be very effective out to 400 yds. Here is few pics to hopefully explain what I do. FIRST I get normal ballistic drop data using all info normally used to set up a high tech scope. You want scope height, bullet BC, verified bullet fps, normal humidity, good middle of road temperature for your area, and avg. station/barometric pressure. For my area 50% humidty, 70*F , and 28.4 station pressure is what I use. SECOND I input this data into ballistic app to see what drops are at 300,350, and 400 yds. I usually do drops in inches per hundred yards(IPHY) as easier to measure sample target reference I will make. I set my rifles at 1" high at 100 making me good to 175yds and remembering need to add inch above target at 200yds. The bigger the target for example on elk, big deer or Axis I just remember hold using regular crosshair 25-200 yds. THIRD If look at target pic below you will see my stagged 300,350, and 400 IPHY drop requirement. I then set up this reference target at 100yds. Then I start using the power ring on scope to match the horizontal crosshair on top and the bottom post at the bottom. As I am checking each one I use white nail polish to put a line or dot at the right power setting. I do line at 300, dot at 350, and back to line for 400. Next are scope pics showing my very old Leupold 3×9 compact scope. My 300 is at 9x with line , dot at 7x for 350, and then another line at 4x. Even thought crude and simple with the time spent getting good data it's very effective. Not Ultra precise but effective. You not going to win the Benchrest Match. LASTLIY go out and shoot it to tweak the power settings if needed. Since using nail polish EZ to scrap off and remark. This ca.n be used on fixed power Duplex scope but it limits you on distance for bottom post. I have one Leupold 6x on handy truck 223 rifle. 25-300yds it's fast and effective. Remember at 300,350, and 400 the point of bottom post is your aim spot. You can even use for windage holds with left and right thin section. Hopefully this helps to maximize a Duplex reticle scope you have available.
