Duck hunter shot and killed in Spakleberry Swamp

Guys my details are limited on this but a young man was shot and killed yesterday in Sparkleberry swamp near Remini, S.C. Evidently some teenagers were duck hunting and knocked down a duck. One of the group went into the thick brush where the duck fell to retrieve it. Evidently one of the other hunters saw movement in the thicket, mistook him for a deer, and shot and killed him. I'm sure the families of every one that was on that hunt will be changed forever. My heart goes out to the families involved

I'm with you. I get invited to go duck hunting by friends quite a bit. My first question is how many people will be in the blind. My personal limit is 4 including me and I prefer 2.

Although tragic, I think that should be considered manslaughter. Shooting at something you are not sure of, when hunting or self defense, has consequences. Someone's life was taken needlessly

I agree. Years ago, I was shot by a dove hunter that had seen us in the field and decided to invite himself to the shoot. He was walking in and decided to shoot at a low bird and there was no way in the world he couldn't have seen me. Knocked me flat. The back of my shirt looked like Swiss cheese. Then the guy ran, jumped in his car and left.

They have cut a bunch of timber in there now. It was an absolutely beautiful place at one time. It's overrun with hunters now.

That's got to be the first time I ever heard of a duck hunter taking a shot at a deer. Normally, a duck hunter wouldn't even have shells that are capable of taking deer. Did the seasons overlap?

Yes. SC has one of the longest deer seasons in the country. Aug 15-Jan 1st in the Lowcountry.
Carrying buckshot during duck season is not (was?) uncommon.

Very sad for both families and all involved. Decades ago while stationed in the South, I knew a guy who was killed while turkey hunting. Very similar situation, as he was in full camo, slowly walking in thick pine timber and underbrush, and the other guy thought he was a turkey and shot at movement. Also knew a young man who was deer hunting and caught a buckshot pellet in his left elbow while deer hunting, and he had limited movement in that arm for the rest of his life. The shooter heard him scream and fled the area and was never found.
