Do I need a coat of primer on a stock?

I have a Bergara B-14 HMR. I want to paint the stock. Do I first need a primer coat?

I use an adhesion promoter. I believe it's a a 3m product.

Clean it well with acetone. Then paint away. I have done a bunch.

What type of paint? Rattle can? Airbrush? Sponge?

A good primer may provide better adhesion but only if you sand the stock first, IMO. I've done both and the stock that was not sanded has seen much more use and has only a few insignificant wear spots where I, and only I, can detect the original gray stock color.

I always prefer to use a primer coat even if its just to start with a uniform base coat color.

My experience with molded stocks like the b-14 hmr is that an adhesion promoter is required.
